Went shooting today out in extreme East County San Diego. Hadn't shot the TEC for about a year. It worked perfect the last time. Well, I loaded up the mag, inserted it, cocked the gun and pulled the trigger. One shot only and then nothing. Removed the mag, cleared the weapon, reloaded the mag and cocked it again. I pulled the trigger and BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM!! At least four rounds went off, maybe five or six. Yikes, Danger Gun!! Pulled the mag, cleared it and put it away for the afternoon. I did try once more to shoot it, but only put two rounds in. Yep, you guessed it, a double-tap. I will be tearing the gun down and inspecting everything, but I think this bad boyeeee is going for a trip back to Intratec to have them straighten it out. I don't need a malfunctioning weapon going off in my hands.

TEC DC9 goes full auto!!!

Interesting. Was it controllable in full auto?
Ok, that aside, check to see if the firing pin is sticking in the forward position, and check to see that the sear is catching the firing pin after every shot. The trigger mechanism in the receivier is supposed to catch the firing pin each time as the bolt closes to keep the pin from striking the next round - hence the semi auto only mode of fire. Let us know how it goes!

The second time around, because I was expecting it. The first time was, WHOA!Originally posted by TurbinatorInteresting. Was it controllable in full auto?
How can I check that myself? I do know something is rattling inside the receiver, so that is prolly my problem.Originally posted by TurbinatorOk, that aside, check to see if the firing pin is sticking in the forward position, and check to see that the sear is catching the firing pin after every shot. Most likely it is in the trigger group. I'm no expert (one day hopefully) but from what I have learned so far it sounds like it most likely in the trigger group. Check the following:
Trigger. Make sure all springs and functioning properly and are tight and not worn/loose. The problem most likely isn't here, but check to make sure the trigger edges, especially any part that comes into contact with another part (hammer, sear, etc) has not been wordn to a rolled edge. You want to make sure that if someone is supposed to catch, it cathes and stays.
Sear. Same thing. Make sure that it is not broken and no edges are worn (unless it is designed to have a radiused edge). Make sure that it resets properly and doens't hang anywhere.
Disconnector. Not sure if it has one, but as I understand it having this break or having the spring break can very much prevent the the trigger group from reseting. Make sure again that this is all in good shape and the springs are good.
If you hear something rattling, I would assume that somewhere in the trigger group you broke an edge off of a part or you lost a spring. It probably binded on the first shot, maybe from not being oiled or cleaned in a while, and any ammount of force (inserting/removing the mag, firing, etc) could have broken off the edge of any part of the trigger group. If the sear, disconnector, etc can't reset properly then it would be possible to go into a full auto mode.
I would take a gamble and guess that your full auto was not controllable (ie. you pulled the trigger and it would dump as many rounds as it wished, not just until you released the trigger). That would sound like something slipping or sticking and not resetting properly.
Again, check the trigger group and there is a good 90% chance you will find the problem there and it can be fixed with $20 in replacment parts, instead of $20 in shipping and a 2 month wait to get it back plus whatever costs it might cost to get it fixed.quemadmodum gladius neminem occidit, occidentis telum est. - Lucius Annaeus

Let us know how it goes. I think if you planned on shipping it back for repair, you'd have to send it through an assault weapons permit holder, if I'm not mistaken.

Yah, I will. I'm gonna try to fix it myself first and see what happens.Originally posted by TurbinatorLet us know how it goes. I think if you planned on shipping it back for repair, you'd have to send it through an assault weapons permit holder, if I'm not mistaken.

take it a WELL QUALIFIED ((and)) assualt weapons-capable Gunsmith. IMO This is NOT a problem for the novice to learn on (no offense intended) save just completely replacing the trigger goup......... don't go filing/fitting on sears without knowing what you're doing!
Dont feel TOOO bad! I had the same thing happen with an SKS and Ramline stock.... after discovering the culprit was the stock, the stock got replaced back to the stock-stock and the ramline got sawed in half! POS!I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered....
I am not a number! I am a free man
1.)All humanity would be better off if Stoooopid hurt.
2.)Why is it that if guns are sooooo unsafe that you're 9 times more likely to die at the hands of your doctor?
3.)Remember...Buy it cheap & stack it deep
