    Tripp Research Hard Chrome Business

    Hello all,

I searched but did not find this so hopefully it has not been discussed already... Noticed yesterday on Trippresearch.com that they will be "permanently" closing down their Hard Chroming business they have been so famous for, on 6/13/08. They will continue to make magazines for 1911s and competitive AR-15s but I guess that side of the business is good enough for them to quit hard chroming... They had done this before temporarily but brought that business back due to popular demand.

Anyway, I apologize if this has been brought up... Now to see what I can send in before their deadline...

I saw that the other time I checked. I always wanted to try them out but it looks like I'll give someone else a try.

Bummer. They've done great work for me and have fantastic gun smithing services as well. The Colt Commander they worked on for me is a favorite.

Virgil is going to be doing a lot more than magazines. He is going to develop and begin building custom 1911's. Take a look at the link on his site that says M1911X CORP.

          That's too bad.
So they're still taking in chrome jobs until June 13th?

That's what they say... That's why I'm contemplating squeezing one last job in there...

Yeah I saw the custom 1911 part... Should be interesting and they will probably use their own chrome and finishing shop to dress up their 1911s, they just won't do it for outside sales... At least, that how I would do it if I had the knowledge and the equipment to do so.

Didn't Virgil collaborate on the SVI line of pistols way back? Can't wait to see what they come up with.

Tripp did this a few years back, and ended up restarting the HC business after a while. Hopefully history will repeat itself again.

Virgil's awesome, but the chroming business is so competitive that it's probably a loser. He makes the best 1911 mags out there and is an awesome gunsmith to boot.

As for other coatings, don't rule out IonBond. Practically bulletproof.

Presumably this will not be available in California because it won't have a
loaded chamber indicator or a magazine disconnect?
