    Father's b-day, Colt Python or Custom 1911?

    Hey All,

I need some help. My father is turning 65 this year, and I bought him two guns that needed some touching up. They ended up both becoming projects, and I'm at the point where I'm not sure which he would prefer. I bought my father a more recent Colt XSE to replace one he sold years ago when I had medical issues to cover bills. It was a semi custom 1911, nothing super fancy, but apparently was a great shooter. So I bought the XSE and sent it off to a gunsmith, which is doing a laundry list of work to. When I was given the time frame, I decided that as a back up, I would find him his "grail gun" which was a four inch blued Python. Turned out that it also needed some work done, so it's being redone by Colt as we speak.

I wanted this to be a surprise, so I don't want to ask him. I thought about giving him both... but I'd be left with nothing after chasing these two projects down, it's been three months of work! =D

Sorry for the essay, but any advise from you guys and gals would be great.

I thought about it, and you are right, he absolutely does, but the 1911 might have more sentimental value to him. Besides, this XSE is turning out to be a serious build, welded frame rails, new barrel, new sights, checkered frame, flat top and serrated slide, all new internals, and of course a new finish... decisions decisions.

I think both of them should be ready, the Python should be back from Baron Technology before the 1911, since the 1911 needs to go back to the gunsmith for final fitting.

If his grail gun is the Python, then that's the one to give him.

I would wrap both up and tell him you bought 2 guns, a father and a son gun. But after having both of them customized and reworked by a gunsmith, you don't know which he would like better. Then I would let him decide which he liked best. I think the though of you doing this for him will be more than he could have wish for his 65th bday! Good job and post pics when you get them back from the gunsmith.

hahaha that's the same option my wife said to do. I think that's the front runner at this point. The other option is to wait for Christmas to give him the other one. I just hope he lets me shoot them! Nowadays, he usually calls to drop off his guns at my house after he's done with them at the range for me to clean...

Sounds to me like a win-win situation. Give your pops two fine weapons that he brings to you to clean. I did not see that he said not to take them back out to the range for proper testing before such cleaning.

                    Thing to consider.

Tough choice, tell Dad that he can have both provided he agrees to the following terms and say so with a wink and a smile.

                    1. They will never be sold.

                    2. If they have to be sold, you get first crack.

                    3. You tell Dad that you want to pass these guns to your children someday as family heirlooms.

I think what you are doing is great, you are trully a "worthy son".

OP, you are an awesome son!

I agree with what Powder_Keg advised. That's a neat one.

I would give the Python since that is his grail gun. I would want to see him enjoy the gun that he has been wanting to have. Then maybe on another special day, 70th bday, etc, give the 1911.

Good luck! Let us know what happens. And yes, pics please!

I'd give him the python now and the 1911 on Christmas.

Give 'em the snake gun! Maybe it's just me, but I would take issue with getting a customized gun of which I had no input to its build.

PYTHON for the win if you decide to give him just one.

On the other hand, I vote for giving him both so that he can enjoy them while his shooting years are still good.

You're a good son, I hope my kids treat me as well when they are grown!
