Bringing in out of state handgun question

    Hi guys,

I read through the sticky regarding the CA certified list, and I could not get an exact answer.

I am a resident of Texas, and a newlywed. My wife lives here in Cali, and for the past year, I have been moving over slowly. I still work in Texas, but have residency in CA due to my marriage and time spent here (CA Tax Code).

Can I bring one of my TX handguns over and register it to myself here? What is this 60 day grace period that I hear about regarding registering it? Someone also said that I can legally PPT said gun during that grace period. I am trying to figure out whether to sell it in TX or just bring it over to shoot with the option to sell it in the future. Thanks.

Within 60 days of bringing a handgun into California, you have to either sell it (to a dealer, or to a 3rd party by a private party transfer through a dealer ), or register it by sending in this form and paying $19 per gun.

For many guns that are not on the CA approved handgun roster you are likely to get more money by PPTing them to California residents, especially if you advertise them here. Also note that for guns you are fond of that are not on the approved handgun roster, they will be difficult to replace in CA, because they cannot be obtained directly from CA dealers.

Also make sure none of your guns are CA assault weapons.
The above does not constitute legal advice. I am not your lawyer.

Before you give up your TX driver's license and residence, I would buy whatever guns you want to buy and keep before you get here. If you move, the only way you can buy a gun that's not on the CA certified list is if it's a private party transfer from another CA resident, or if you have a LEO exemption.

mrmonkeyman is right, for quality guns that aren't on the CA list, you'll get more $$ selling them in CA than TX. On this board's for sale section, Pre series 80 Colt 1911s (series 70, WWI & WWII repros, pre 1970 commercials, etc) and pre lock S&W revolvers are especially popular.
