    1911 barrel help

I found this site that carries 16" 1911 barrels. I want to put a fake can on my 1911 without the use of a threaded barrel. The MFI fake can will fit this barrel but its roughly 5" too long. How do I cut the barrel down?

you could take it to a reputable gunsmith, to do it properly. That is if he doesn't just laugh your butt right out of his shop.

I think it's a monumentally stupid idea to add a fake suppressor to a firearm in a state that forbids private ownership of suppressors and ask you to reconsider the idea. It's like flying a neon sign begging law enforcement to stick their nose in your business.

And that's not even addressing the silliness of mixing airsoft toys with real guns, or that it just screams 'poser'.

But whatever, it's your money to waste / legal hassle to endure. Enjoy.

I have no problem with your desire to put a fake can on your 1911, afterall people do that all the time on AR OLL's.

My problem is that I think you'll have a hard time getting it to function properly with all that weight out there interferring with the proper function of the barrel locking lugs.

However, if you insist take the 16" barrel to a gunsmith to have him turn it on his lathe to shorten it and recrown the muzzle end.

"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"

I'm throwing in the Mall Ninja flag on this one. To each his own but to make a gun more less useful isn't something I would do. But it's your money pi*s it away any way you want.

If you live in So Cal I can give you the name of somebody who can do the jo.....ah nevermind.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

Just enjoying my gun guys. Don't do it to yours if you don't like it. I figured I'd have to take it to a smith. I was thinking more along the lines of a machine shop.

If your not going to shoot bullseye with it use a pipe cutter to score a straight line around it, cut it off with a hack saw, clean it up with a file and then use a round head bolt in a drill with some lapping compound on it to clean up the crown. It will shoot straight enough.
            where are my pistol mags?

              What TMC said.

Those Roto barrels aren't really the best, you get what you paid for. You only want the looks anyway, but I'm not sure you are ready for the headaches to come making a super weighed down barrel on a 1911. You'll have to go to the lightest recoil spring that will reliably return it to battery after firing. If the action is not smooth it will choke and cause stoppages. Since you're going for the suppressed looked, who cares if it works, right?

you should just make a really long can and you will want another bushing to leave on this barrel permanantly and make sure you keep it light

on and put some sights on the can too you want to be able to at least hit a 55 gallon drum

Cool beans. I'll have a machine shop shop the barrel and recrown it. I'mplanning on using the MFI slip-over can. It weighs 6 oz. (aluminum). I figure that 6 inches of steel 1911 barrel probably weighs that much. The 16" carbine barrels appear to cycle well enough from what I've read. If it becomes trouble, I can always put the old 5" barrel in again.

What is the wieght of a 5" barrel? can somebody wiegh one for me?

Save the money and do it yourself. Its not brain surgery and the gun will shoot fine. Guns are just little machines and can be worked on at home and still shoot well.

                      A stock 5" 45 bushing barrel is 3.5oz.
