I have a 357 and a 1911, how come no one really recommends carrying a 1911 when back packing?

I currently only have a semiauto (XD-40) and find that it is not so good to take backpacking, dirt gets in every tiny crevice, nook, cranny, piece, part, spring, and doodad. Because of this, I want a revolver for camping/backcountry .

Ask yourself this, are you trying to tickle the bear or kill it?

This thread is going on 3 pages. Where the hell have you been? Go back to page 1 and start reading.

I was recently in a gun shop in Michigan where a gentleman recounted a recent bear encounter. The tale went as follows: Bear charged him, he put 4 rounds of .454 casull into the bear out of a Ruger alaskan, center mass. The bear stopped his charge, and walked away but did not die.

If it's Bears you are going to defend against, by all accounts, no handgun will be assured to stop a fight.

Regarding two legged predators, I'm not familiar with hiking laws.

I'm reading over the hiking laws. It's a maze.

I might seriously just get a can of bear spray and a small caliber, light pistol and leave it at that.

Glock 26 with a .22 kit in the backpack is a great combo.

Food if the trip is long enough.

In California, you should be worried about pot growers, mountain lions and bears, and the bears are a distant third. I'd pack a combat handgun rather than a bear driller in this state. Our bears are small and skittish. Our pot farmers are not.

This isn't Grizz country where you need a 12ga.

if it were me i would go for a 10mm glock or a .44 mag revolver. i seen a guy drop two moose in his driveway because they were attacking his dogs, on the alaskan police show thats on discovery channel with a 10 mm glock.
