I just inherited a beretta 92s it has original box and is in good condition. My question is what's the pistol worth? And is it rare?

Not rare and can be purchased on line for around $600, NIB (new in box).I support the NRA, if you are not in, you can't win.

As I recall the 92S came first, then 92SB, 92F, then 92FS. Of course M9 and M9A1 is the military designation. Wikipedia has a good article on the Berettas and the timeline.
A new Beretta 9mm with the American style mag release is $600. A Beretta 9mm from the early 1980s with the European mag release may be $300. YMMV

New model mags may not work in your older 92S.
They only made between 5-7000 of the first model 92 with the "stepped slide", then made about 50,000+ of the "straight sided slide" before the gun was redesigned the 92S, with a slide mounted safety and the heel release was moved to the current frame button.
If you have the heel release, then this would be a very early 92S (or a modified original 92), before police and military contracts forced beretta to move the magazine release to the frame. If its in good condition I would not let it go for anything lower than 500. I think some people might actually pay more if they are Beretta fan/collectors. That left side grip mag release is funky and some people might like that. But as a range toy with limited availability on new mags... Might hurt sales with some ppl.Comment

New in box, means someone bought it and did not fire it. There were a couple of closed actions on gun broker that gave me the guide price.I support the NRA, if you are not in, you can't win.Comment

Most newer Beretta magazines will work in it , just look for the mag catch notch on the lower part of the mag. almost all my 92fsmags have the extra notch in it for the early 92."I will not buy ammo from the private ammo sellers,it only encourages them to keep buying ,and reselling the ammo they bought from WAL-MART at 2-3 times what they bought it for"!Comment
