Welcome to the "1911 Itch Club"

Nothing against any other semi-auto handgun. But 1911s are just at a different level of awesomeness... 100+ years of service.

Take a look at this guide for the maintenance of a 1911. It has some good articles to read about the 1911.

Doing this to your slide stop will eliminate those "idiot marks".

Hmmm. Interesting. Did you do it yourself? Any functionality issues?

new 1911s tend to be very very tight, break in nice and easy and the slide stop will be a pain since it will be tight, make sure for the first time to put masking tape to avoid scratching, otherwise they are very easy guns to break down and maintain, enjoy!!

I use XF7 on mine. It doesn't thicken up in cold weather unlike Froglube and you can still wipe it clean with a rag. It also will not burn off and it stays put.

                6) Stick with the one-piece full-length guide rod or with the GI-style one. Two-piece guide rods require another tool for take down.
The full length guide rods also offer no improvement.

                7) Find mags that work for you. I would recommend KimPro Tac mags. Others here have recommended Wilsons or other brands.
Wilson Combat and Chip McCormick magazines work great.

                8) Replace the recoil spring every 1,000 - 2,000 rounds. There are many kinds so use the correct tension for your gun(s)
That is very excessive. I'd be replacing mine every 2-4 range trips if that were the case. It should last in excess of 10k rounds, like much more than that.

The improvement is that you don't need a hex key to take down the gun. Two piece guide rods often require a hex key to takedown where a one piece guide rod, you just need to apply pressure to remove. Since my guide rod cap has a recessed center, it hurts my fingers to try and do it bare handed, so the bottom of the 1911 magazine works just fine for removal.

Whenever I can, I try to make all my guns field strip able without the use of tools.

That is Logman's Slide Stop Mod. If done properly, there should be no malfunctions or other issues.

                    A few notes:

Pick up a set of small needle files at Home Depot ($10-$15). Make sure you have at least a triangular shaped one and a round one.

Measure twice, cut once. After you field strip it for the first time, insert the slide stop onto the frame and carefully watch where the lobe of the slide stop hits the plunger detent. You can use a little marker or something to mark it and see where it rubs. Do this several times.

Once you're 1000% sure of where it is rubbing, take the slide stop out of the frame and hold it nice & steady. Take your triangular needle file and draw it towards you very steadily. Take short strokes if need be. Do NOT go back and forth as fast as you possibly can. The intent is to start the notch so that your file doesn't wander all over the slide stop lobe. Once your notch is started, then you can go back & forth a little quicker.

Take careful note of the photo-the notch isn't really deep and doesn't break any of the other edges or angles anywhere else. The whole purpose of Logman's Slide Stop Mod is to create a notch on the slide stop to keep it from slipping around off the plunger detent. Go just deep enough so that it will rest nicely on the plunger detent and can be pressed in successfully. If it doesn't feel like it's deep enough, you can always take off more material. You can't add material back.

Once you get it where you're happy, you can smooth out any rough/sharp edges.

                    Hope this helps!

Happy filing, shooting and be safe!

You're confusing the full length with the shorter GI. The two piece guide rods are full length. Some of the full length rods are one piece and they offer no advantage over the GI rods, but they do drain your wallet.

I think what Dattebayo and I are saying is that two piece guide rods may require another tool, whereas gi-style and flgr do not because the bottom of the mag can do it.

Oh, I thought the one piece flgr needed a tool too.

Nope, just push down on the rod and turn the lock to the side.
