    M&P 9mm vs Sig SP2022

So here is the situation... I pre-paid ordered (probably ignorantly) a Smith and Wesson M&P9 from a LGS last December... month after month the dealer was getting nothing from any of his distributors. I called virtually every LGS in the Bay Area every couple of weeks and none ever had an M&P 9mm when I was calling, and most said they didn't know when or if they would get another shipment.

Went to the said LGS today and he basically said that his distributors were telling him that they doubted they would get any more CA M&P9's before they went off roster in August.

SO he offered to substitute a new Sig SP2022 9mm with Night sights for the same $. I know it's a somewhat comparable gun but have never shot one (and have shot and liked the M&P9, own an similar sized M&P 22lr and already bought extra Mags and holsters for the M&P9).

I am left handed, so preferred the M&P ambi mag release and somewhat ambi slide lock. On the Sig I can move the Mag release but the De-cocker and the slide lock are not swab-able.

I'm thinking I go ahead and get the SP2022 so at least I have a 9mm that I can shoot now. If I don't care for it, can always sell and get something else later. Who knows when or if the M&P9 will ever come back in stock (at least the CA version). I could sell the M&P 9mm mags and holster and just move along my way with the Sig.

Thoughts or opinions on this? Anyone selected between these 2 guns, pro's/cons, etc.

    Thanks

I have both, although I had a rocky start with the 2022 I eventually fell in "like" with it. If I had to pick one or the other it's M&P all day, my Apex'd M&P is outstanding.

The 2022 should make you happy IMO, do you have the chance to go rent one?

Thanks for the reply... No time for a rental... I either take the SP2022 in the next day or two, or keep waiting/hoping for the M&P9

I'm thinking maybe a M&P SSE'ed later on...I just want to shoot some of the little bit of 9mm that I've been able to squirrel away the past few months.

I really like my SP2022, I'd certainly take it over the seemingly faint chance of the M&P someday.

I can't comment on the SP2022, but in Socal locally I've been able to find the M&P9 in stock in a couple LGS, LGS' have been telling me supply is getting better and better as well. Keep looking, you should be able to find one.

If you don't let me know, I'll take those mags off you

I'm hearing the opposite from every LGS I've talked to in NorCal... Doom and Gloom, at least for this model... no stock and no prospect of stock is the common reply.

Why would the M&P fall off the roster in August?

Can you shoot DA/SA at speed? If not, are you willing to take the time to learn? If yes to either, all indications are that the SP is a good gun. I can shoot DA/SA, but in order to keep up with my times with a SF pistol or an SA only pistol, I have to concentrate a lot harder. Translated that means if issued a DA/SA pistol, I would be fine with it, but I'd rather shoot SF or SA only. So it depends on how you feel about it.

I've owned both and I honestly dont think the SP2022 is even in the same class as the M&P. If you liked the ergos, ease of takedown, and the striker fired design of the M&P, you should wait. The Sig design seems so outdated for a polymer pistol compared to the new stuff. Only thing I really liked about the SP2022 was that it was 100% reliable. Mine was purchased 12 years ago and I heard the newer ones are not as reliable.

I've only shot one DA/SA honestly which was my pop's SA 1911... Everything else I have shot was 100% DA, but even that is limited, so I'm willing and able to learn on anything with enough time and practice at the range. This wont' be a CCW and only a .0001% chance ever needed for home defense. Likely 100% target and hobby shooting.

Right now the 9mm S&W M&P9 Model 109201 is scheduled to drop on Aug 16th, and just what the distributors were telling my LGS, they didn't expect it to be renewed, but could be just talk.

Thanks for the reply... I loved the Ergo's of the M&P (and bought the "trainer" M&P22 to match) when I rented it a couple times and shot quite a few rounds with the rental. Just the few mins in the shop the SP2022 didn't "feel" as good in my hand as the M&P (although only tried one of the backstraps).

Your grandfathers 1911 is single action btw. The Sig will have a heavy/long trigger press on the first round and a light/short press thereafter. I had the same opinion about the Sig. It didn't point naturally and I found the slide to be too high. Do you have a Glock? The closest thing to an M&P is a Glock in my opinion.

I dislike every glock I've touched or fired... felt like I was holding a 2x4...

Don't do it! 2022 is very inferior to the M&P. You get a cheap gun at he M&P price. Be patient or get your money back. There are some on the forum for sale.

I really like our Sig SP2022. That said, if you don't like the feel of it in your hands today, it won't feel any better tomorrow. The ergo's won't change. Since you're a lefty, it's a huge obstacle to overcome. The slide release and decocker are both on the left hand side of the pistol and will be very difficult to manipulate all of the time/every time you go shooting. FWIW, we bought our SP2022 back in December at Reeds for $375 (included a $25 discount for the range rental). I don't think the M&P is in the same ballpark price-wise (it's higher up the food chain).

I would check around some more and try to get your money back at this point. The M&P is a much nicer pistol, has better after-market parts/accessories support compared to the Sig. Don't get me wrong, I really like our Sig.

Happy shopping, shooting and be safe.
