RIA 1911 questions

Turner's currently has the GI model on sale for $420. I'm really tempted, but as this will be my first 1911 I had a couple questions.

First, other than the beaver tail what's different between this and the tactical model? If that's the only difference how much on average does a gunsmith charge to replace one?

Second, grips. I need some suggestions. I've seen a few I liked, but the stock ones are uncomfortable to me.

Finally, night sights. Thoughts on these, and if they're a worthwhile investment?

Skeletonized hammer and trigger I think, and better sights than what comes on the GI model. As for night sights, what ever floats your boat, I don't mess with them but that's a personal preference thing.

If you gonna change the sight is would recomend the tac model, which has dove tail cut out for the sights. The gi will probably need some smithing for new sights. I have the tac model, and purchased it as my first pistol, and i trust my life to it. Rias are great 1911 it may not be as pretty as my colt gold cup but it is just as accurate.

Difference from mine is the tactical model has the skeletonized trigger, hammer, Novak style sights (still needs to get passed on front couple times) beavertail, ambi safety, sear is different, hammer pin (due to the ambi safety), and full length guide rod set up.

Or you can purchase that one at 420 and customize as YOU see fit.

You might find that those options on the tactical are not needed. You can customize how you see fit and choosing the components you want.

I purchased the Auto Ordnance GI and I LOVE it in it's stock form. Wouldn't change a thing on it. (opps, i did purchase a new mag though)

I love mine and would never sell it, ever. That thing will stay with me til' I go or it breaks (but I doubt it will).

That's a really good point. I may end up doing that after all, I know I've read nothing but good things about RIA. Thanks for the opinions all.

I just DROs a tactical model from Island View im ventura yesterday. Their website says $499 but has a tag for $549 at the store. They honored the $499 price.

Personally I always recommend the tactical model over the base G.I. version. I find the better sights and beavertail grip safety/extended thumb safety well worth the extra cost and its cheaper than doing it yourself.

Recently picked up the tactical myself. I can't say a bad thing about it. Far more accurate than I am.
