    Inexpensive 1911 9mm?

Does anyone have suggestions regarding a decent, reasonably priced (i.e. under $500) 9mm 1911?

Most of the research I have done shows them priced in the $1000 range.

I did find some useful stuff here:

but none of these look like a 1911 frame.

Will a 1911 9mm accept the 22 conversion kits (Ciener, etc?)

    Thanks for any input

I ordeerd a kimber 22 coversion with hope of lots of quick draw practice.

22 kit did not fit my kimber target 9 the duscover was different legth aand the slide stop hole did not line up.

I was told it had to be a 45 so then I tried to install the slide on my rock island 45 ,that didn't work either the inside of the slide was a little to wide.

I don't know if the ciener kit is the same thing as the kimber but if is

    I'd say no go !

If rock island or taurus made a low cost 9mm I would say get it . Do you have any other 9mm get a springfield xd or a glck 19.

Does it have to be a 9mm? The cheapest will be to find a used Springfield Armory on consignment or advertising. Anything else will be close to or over $1K. For example, buy an RIA or cheapie 1911 for $400 give or take $50. Sell the top end for $150, but a Caspian Slide for $200, buy a barrel for $150+. Don't forget the extractor, ejector, FPS, FP, recoil system - add another $100+ depending how fancy you want these parts. Don't forget to add the fee for a gunsmith to fit that ramped barrel, because a real 1911 frame ramped for a 45ACP barrel will not be able to accomodate a non fully supported 1911 barrel due to the difference in ramp length needed for each. You can try and may get lucky in the specs, but 95% of the time it won't work. Same for 40S&W - reason why they had to long load 40s when converting 10mm 1911 pistols. I've been there done that and so on... If you see a SA 1911 pistol in 9mm for $750 in good to excellent condition, jump on it right away. It will save you money in the long run unless you are planning to relocate to a free state.

Rock Island Armory 1911 , $380 delivered. Only thing is that it's a 45 acp.

Rock Island also sells a .38 Super 1911. All that is required to swap over to a 9mm is a conversion barrel, recoil spring and magazines. The .38 Super version, however, sells for a little more than the .45 Rock Island. Getting the base pistol and necessary conversion pieces could set you over the desired cost.

Your best bet is to find a used one. I found a new one a little over a year ago on Gunbroker, but it was for $750. At the time they were very hard to find, so I snapped it up.
It's a Springfield Armory and very good quality.
Don't know about the conversion kits.

I've been thinking about doing this, wonder if it does work without any fitting.

It's too bad we can only get the nickel super 38 here.

                Thanks for the info

Thank you all for the info, it is appreciated.

Why are these so expensive?!? (Rhetorical question, doesn't need an answer)

What's the next best alternative? Browning Hi Power 9mm?

Hipowers are great. Another option I would Highly recommend is a CZ 75B SA (single action)

that's a really nice looking CZ... that rear sight looks pretty funky.

as for the "cheapest" 1911 9mm, it's the following:
-RIA .38 super nickel $450 drosed (roughly)
                    -9mm barrel from sarco $50
-9mm mags (vary in price but from what i've read on m1911.org, the SA metalform 9mm mags seem to be the ticket, and tripp is/has come out with some 9mm mags that'll hold 10 rounds)

What is the purpose for your 9mm pistol? Is it for competition or home defense? The next best thing would be the CZ75 platform in EAA Witness or CZ.

                        Target (paper puncher) use only

Just a nice paper puncher. I don't plan on competition any time soon (due to lack of time and skills, not lack of interest).

The CZs are supposed to be pretty good. The old CZ-52s are great guns.

                        Thanks for everyone's input.

You could also wait a little bit for this to come out...

                          RIA 9mm Commander!

Rock Island Armory showed this at the 2008 shot show recently. There is no release date yet but it is a regular production model by Armscor so it shouldn't be too hard to get them out and the pricing should be around $400-$500 like the rest. Also they seem to have good customer service judging by the feedback on the forums. Now lets just hope it gets on the list...

Here is a .45 recently posted on m1911.org to show off what you can do with an "inexpensive" RIA...

I personally really like this STI Guardian 9mm, but I don't think they are on the list (and they retail for $1k!) You can read the review just for kicks here: http://ezine.m1911.org/STIGuardian_frame.htm

Also like the Rogue 9mm as an even better CCW!

You can see the rest of the new 1911 guns at the 1911org e-zine:
An Internet reference site, with all you ever wanted to know about the M-1911 pistol, designed by the most ingenious gunsmith of all times, John Moses Browning.

That is a great website for all the 1911 info you could ever want! RIA seems to be a pretty decent starter pistol as many owners are impressed with what they get for the price. I also considered going the .38 super route, but I think I'll just wait until their 9mm comes out!

hold your breath and let me know how that goes... if a 1911 pattern pistol is not on the list... it's not gonna get on. the big thing is the mag disconnect.
