I hate to do a 45acp vs 10mm but which subcompact?

Im looking at a g30 or a g29 for backcountry lake fishing in the sierras and the rockies. What have u carried back there or recommend to carry?

Both are good carry weapons. True 10mm loads have more energy at 100 yards then .45acp has at the muzzle. (if that matters to you) I have and carry a Glock 29SF often while backpacking/fishing.

Edit: I'd personally worry more about 2 legged critters than the 4 legged type. Bring along some bear spray with your choice of firearm and call it a day.

Last time I faced one I had a 300 weatherby AND a 454 Casull, I know now to never go into bear country so lightly armed.

There are NO Grizzlies in the Sierras, they are all black bears tho some have brown coats. PS 1000+ lbs really?

I hope you aren't trying to tell us this happened in CA. Because even if you were somehow old enough to have seen a grizzly here, 454 Casull didn't exist at the time. And if a 454 and a 300 Weatherby were not enough, how in the heck can a lonely 44mag be sufficient? Oh, and op, I say 10mm, but I'm biased. I carry a 10mm 1911 when I'm out and about.

Has anyone done ballistic gelatin tests on both rounds from short barrel pistols?

The .45 does not seem to have the penetration of the higher velocity/ smaller diameter 10mm

I just don't know what velocity / penetration you get from short barrels with the 10MM

A fishing license. Even out there, the wardens can sniff you out!


Honestly, a pot and spoon are good enough but if you insist, take the 10mm. The 45 doesn't have the penetrating power of the 10, but you'd better be able to prove you were justified. Shooting a bear could be as costly as shooting an assailant in the city.

Is there any real difference out of a 4 inch barrel between the 2. Most of the ballistics are out of 6in or greater

The CA brown bears seem docile in my encounters as evidence by dumba** people getting close and taking pictures but a CO trip is in the works and just wanted to start plannig

Do you people actually think everything revolves around Krappifornia ?

I keep either a Marlin .444 lever gun, a Wooby 338/378 or a Heym 77B in 470NE right by my side up there....along with said Casull.

You need to re read the OP's post he clearly sated the Sierras and there are only two, Mexico and Cali and neither have Grizzly. You got proof or pics of your 1100 lb bear.

The same thing happened to me I carried a single shot .50 BMG and the bullet it bounced off the cyborg bears exo-skeleton luckily my 12 year old nephew was slower than myself and I was able to get away. Now all I am able to pack is a AT4 Rocket Launcher and baseball shaped Semtex.

Pretty big difference. I finished some load development this weekend for my G29sf, the load I settled on was 1270fps with a 180gr XTP. Add in the section density, big difference in penetrating power.

I agree with those that say the most danger you are in when in the wild is when you are around other people.

I also agree with the sentiment regarding bears. In CA I is not an issue, I believe the last bear fatality in CA was a trainer mauled by his student. Cats on the other hand do occasionally attack, usually earlier in the spring before Bambi makes her appearance.

On the other hand, if you are going where real bears are an issue (not to be confused with CA Black bears) 10mm would not be my first choice, but then those guys hunting those big costals with handguns always amaze me as well. Frankly I think my weapon of choice in that situation would be a 375H&H.

Anyway between a G29 and G30 there is no comparison.
