hello, do rmr's negate the sight radius advantage of long slide pistols? any point in putting an rmr on a glock 34 for example?

Can't really compare sight radius to a dot. The dot creates the a focus only on the target, where the dot appears to be. Conventional sights require focusing on the rear, the front, and the target, although the front sight should appear to be sharper. A dot makes it much easier to hit a 6" B zone plate at 25 yards, but it takes a serious amount of practice on a dot to come out of the holster quickly and get on the first target.

A dot is no substitute for the fundamentals of handgun shooting: stance, grip, sight picture and trigger control.

I do have one Open gun, a G17L with a Trijicon Red Dot (discontinued) but shoot the 2 G17's more often than the rest of the 7 Glocks.

1. Sight radius of the gun's iron sights has no effect on the RMR.

2. The reason for putting an RMR on a Glock 34 is if you perform better with the RMR compared to iron sights.

i should have been more clear. im asking whether an RMR can give compact and regular sized pistols the same range capabilities as a long slide if you were planning to shoot over 25 yards.

Sight radius is irrelevant when using a red dot. The projected dot doesn't have a front-rear alignment issue. Barrel length might be a concern, though, at longer range.

Yes, the sight radius of the gun has no bearing on the RMR. That is, whether long or short the RMR will give the same sight picture and reticule centering because the aiming is contained solely in the device.
An interesting question because other than the stability that a longer/more massive barrel generates, the use of a red dot (or equivalent) on a handgun negates the need for sight radius.
I am interested in putting RMR's on my handguns because as I get older it just seems like an obvious thing to do. But I shoot H&K's (USP's and P7's) and there don't seem to be any mounts for them (without machining the slides which is a non-starter for those guns).

As already stated, NO. But you will most likely need suppressor height sights to co-witness through an RMR.

Here's an RMR with suppressor sights on a 17L and 19
