    Multiple Gun Purchase Question

I have a question regarding multiple gun purchases in CA I hope you guys can help me with. I apologize if this is a worn out subject from the past.

I recently asked a local dealer if I could purchase a handgun and a rifle at the same time under the same single DOJ background check. I was told 'No', that each purchase was subject to its own background check because handguns and rifle sales are recorded separately by the state.

To the contrary, I was told by my neighbor that a local FFL did exactly that for him by handling the sale and transfer of ownership of both a handgun and a rifle at the same time with one background check. Seems to me that it doesn't make sense that there would have to be two checks of the same person at the same time by the same department.

Does anyone know what the answer is, and where I may be able to find legal reference to this?

    I thank you in advance.

My understanding is one handgun and nothing else per DROS, multiple long guns but no handguns per DROS.

      Hey Steve,

I think the way it works is you have to get a separate DROS on the pistol, but multiple rifles can be on one rifle DROS...so in your case i believe you'd have to do two since its a pistol and rifle.

as stated above, one handgun per DROS and one/multiple long guns on another separate DROS.

Maybe your friend is confused. But no matter what happened with him, Your FFL is not trying to pull a fast one on you

          Currently...
          one handgun per DROS
multiple long guns can be done on one DROS.

          Examples...
one handgun and one rifle/shotgun/other = two DROS (one for handgun and one for long gun)
one handgun and three rifles/shotguns/others = two DRPS (one for handgun and one for the long guns)
two handguns = two DROS (one for each handgun)
two handguns and one rifle/shotgun/other = three DROS (one for each handgun and one for long gun)
two handguns and three rifles/shotguns/others = three DROS (one for each handgun and one for the long guns)

          Starting 01-01-2014...
one firearm (handgun or long gun) per DROS

He might have been talking about the Federal 4473 form?

The state thinks a plastic butter knife might be a little too much to use for self defense. Remember, unless your illegal or one of the "cherished minorities" you are worthless to the state unless they can bleed more cash from you.

Nope, you just add papers to record all of the serials on the 4473.

I have bought several long guns on one dros. I was shocked the first time, now I'm just scared because the dealer knows I like long guns as well as hand guns so he's always trying to get me to buy at least two long guns when I come into the shop.

                      Only in California!

I just bought 2 handguns and 1 long gun with only 1 background check, the salesman even ask me if I'm sure that's all I want!
