Hi guys, I'm getting an XD soon and can't decide what I want. A .40 or 45. Any input to help me sway in either direction would be great. Thanks!

What will you be using the gun for?Originally posted by tankermanI think most folks bubba their AR's because they watch too many action movies, play too many video games and don't understand how to socialize properly, so they fantasize about being 'action hero's'. Kind of like little girls playing dress-up.Originally posted by Douglas711Is everybody stocking up on guys now? Just curious some gun prices seem to be getting high. -
9mm.
I got on the 40 bandwagon and the only difference I notice between 9mm 40 and 45 is that the 40 leaves a bigger hole in the wallet when it comes to ammo purchase over the 9mm. Or get the 40 and a conversion barrel to 9mm.
If it's a duty weapon then you might want to consider either the larger caliber but you mainly want to ask yourself, "what are you going to use the pistol for". I shoot paper and steel and it really doesn't matter for me and for HD i have the shotty.Comment

Personally with 10 rounds being standard on both models, I would go for the .45, grew up shooting this round so I have always been a fan of it.
I also find the .45 a little less snappy than the .40, not that either is a mule, that just may make a difference for you.I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

If you're in a survival movie and the hot blond twists her ankle and can't walk, you damn well figure a way to carry her. If it's a dude, you shake his hand and say "best of luck".Comment

Thanks for the input. It will be used for just a general weapon. Range shooting, HD if need be. (yes I already have shotguns for HD) But I just want a good general purpose round. Funny thing is I'll probably be getting a 9mm, .40, and 45 within the next couple years anyway. BTW I've also been eye balling the S&W M&P, anyone have any feed back on these?Comment

I would opt for the .45acp. as it's less expensive and plentiful ammo than .40 s&w.
Though both the .45 and 9mm are plentyful and available as surplus NATO / Milsurp, the .45acp gets my recommentation for stopping power.
My son has an XD Compact .45. I like the grip safety addition over a glock trigger tang only. But again, my personal preference is a gun with a hammer, not a striker.***Honesty is the Foundation of One's Character***
*** In comparing the virtues of various calibers, using hollow point ammo: it is absolutely undeniable that, while a 9 mm or .40 S&W may or may not expand, a .45 will never shrink. ***

+1 on 9mm
+1,000,000 on the M&P
I bought one a few months back, love it. Everyone I have let shoot it loves it. Too bad the rebate isn't going on anymore, because that was a sweet deal.
They really are sweet guns, and if it weren't for the sigma slip up, they would be getting more publicity. Plus, M&P is made in USA
Rent one and see for yourself. If you can't find one, I'll let you shoot mine if you are near San Bernardino
I cleaned & lubed after I took it home, and haven't since. Over 800 rounds through it (WWB, American Eagle, reloads, and some really old, dirty UMC) and not a single malfunction. MP-Pistol.com is a board dedicated to this gun.Comment

If you get into reloading, shooting 45ACP isn't bad at all. You can reload for 45 Auto for 12-15 cents per shot; or $120-150 for per 1000 rounds.WTB: Winchester /Miroki 1895 .30-06; No1. Mk.
