    Safety reminder.

I have been an LE firearms instructor for many years now, also help out with civilian CCW.

Recently , I noticed that MANY new handguns sold here in Ca have different devices that supposed to let the shooter know if their firearms is loaded or not.

There are also handguns with a magazine disconnect feature that is supposed to prevent handgun form firing when the magazine is removed.

We (LE) do not recognisee those gadgets, and NEVER rely on them .

If You want to be sure that Your weapon is safe to:

. Point Your weapon is safe direction with finger out of the trigger.
Remove the magazine and put it in Your pocket.
    Lock the slide back.
    visually inspect the chamber.
If You want to keep Your weapon in safe condition , leave it with slide
locked back and NO magazine in the gun.

. If You need to know that Your weapon is loaded You can either:

Make it safe as shown above and then load , OR remove the magazine , make sure that
it has desired amount of ammunition in it , press check to make sure
that You have a round int he chamber. ( if thats what You need to have).

Stay away from using gadgets and be safe

    Do it the proven way.

Are you saying that our California DOJ approved safety measures are not reliable? They must be reliable as they are of government approved for our benefit and protection. In order to reduce my personal liability, I therefore must and do rely upon them. Sorry, had to say it.

By the way, I too perform and use your above stated traditional safey checks.

The loaded chamber indicator and magazine disconnect are just requirements that was put in to the roster to further restrict handguns coming into CA. It has nothing to do with safety. Proper training, follow the basic safety rules and be vigilant with firearms are the real solutions.

LOL I know huh. What a shocker that Calif. mandates things which just increase the price and make a firearm actually more dangerous because people rely on them intead of using firearm fundamentals.

              Loaded Chamber Indicator (garbage)

I suppose we should include the marginal 'loaded chamber' indicator.

I NEVER could tell on my 92's.... So a press check is in order.

              .

As I said before , no one I know in LE is ever trained to rely on any kind of gadgets to tell if their weapon is loaded or not.

Also , magazine disconnect makes You helpless during a tactical (magazine save) reload.

(When You remove a partially full magazine and replace it with a fresh one during the gun fight ).

I saw several civilians with CCW who told me that they rely on different gadgets on their guns to tell if they are safe or loaded.

                NOT A GOOD IDEA.

In addition I like to physically check if the chamber and magazine well are empty because sometimes there will not be enough light for visual confirmation.

                    +1!

When my dept. does night shooting training , we tell officers to use a finger to check to make sure that the chamber is empty.

                        For sure.

I started this topic because few days ago there was someone with a CCW who said that according to the indicator, His .40 caliber pistol was empty.....

I told Him to make the gun safe.

                        He did.

He had His magazines loaded with 9mm ammo , by mistake.

When He pulled the slide back there was a 9mm round in the chamber......

He thought the gun was unloaded.......

I had an instructor take a pistol with the factory magazine disconnect do a trick.

He applied a little pressure on the trigger and then dropped the magazine. He then added more pressure and the hammer completed its travel to the rear and fired a shot.

He said that as long as a bit of pressure is on the trigger before the magazine is dropped, the magazine safety is disengaged and will not reengage until the trigger is fully released.

These devices can be good if people still follow the 4 main safety rules.

I have heard people's comments that the M1 Garand/ M1A safety is flawed as it sits within the trigger guard. When you ask them about the safety rules and ask how it is dangerous, they sometimes get it. Sights on target and then disengage the safety.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                            (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Great post...all these liberal forced "safety" devices are completely useless...and in some cases like the one you've told can actually be misleading and will probably cause more gun accidents in new shooters

Safety is in your head, the firearm is always loaded until physically cleared
