trying to decide between the 226r and the 229r. i like the shorter barrel of the 229 over the 226. i have a 226 already in 9 so i might also opt for the .40 cal. how does the 226 feel compared to the 229 with regards to weight and grip while shooting? if there is anything else to consider please chime on in.

Have both ~ (To me) the 228/229 "feels" better in the hand. I would say the 229 is more balanced.

The P229 balances better in my hand but Sig just came out with the P226 Elite SAO and I just have to own it. Otherwise I would get the M11-A1 because of that cool sticker.

Go for a pre-Cohen era (1990's)/pre-MIM P229. You can get them for decent prices and they are superior in quality to later examples in my opinion. When you get it, remember to pay particular attention to greasing the underside of the frame rails, near the muzzle. This is a heavy wear area for the .40 229's.

If you want a 9mm, P228 owners rave about their balance over the P229. With all the great refinishing options out there now, rust concerns should not be a deterrent (P228). You can find good deals on them now and again if you are patient and diligent.

I love my p229. Get a .40 with SRT and a 357 SIG conversion barrel and you'll have a great shooting pistol with better ammo availability since you'll be able to change calibers in seconds by simply swapping the barrel. I originally bought mine during the panic 4 years ago because 357 SIG ammo was the easiest to find at the time. That's not so much the case this time around but having options is always a good idea.

The grips on the P226 and p229 are similar...but the p229 is definitely a little smaller. In terms of shooting, a P226 in 9mm shoots alot different than one on .40. I've shot them back to back and it is very noticeable. Going from a P226 to a P229 is going to be even more noticeable.

I have them both and love them both. 229 has better ergonomics.

OP- I have a German 226 and 228, both in 9mm. I use the 226 for home defense and the 228 is my back up and road gun. Since you have the 226 already, go for the 229 and I think the magazines should still be interchangeable.

Either way, with a 229, you now have a road and/or CCW pistol. And I like staying all in 9mm, thats just me.

awesome responses...thanks to all, my brothers in arms. pretty unaminous for the 229 with regards to ergo, grip, and balance. the 226 does feel a bit big for me so sounds like the 229 would be a good fit for me.

now just having to decide between the 40 and 9. i have both calibers and shoot both well.....tough decision for me. they are almost the same in price too. urrrr...

I own both the P229 and P226 in 40 S&W.
The P226 is all stainless with the rail and Crimson Trace laser grips. It has night sights and is my house gun.
The P229 has no rail, has bar dot contrast sights and is my new EDC replacing a P6. The P229 also has Houge rubber finger grooved grips on it.
If you get the P229 look for one used with no rail. They just look so much cleaner and carry well if you ever get the chance.

OP-I think the magazines should still be interchangeable.

The magazines are not interchangeable.
The P229 mags get a little wider towards the upper middle running to the bottom.

To further elaborate on this. You can use P226 mags in a P229, no problem there...as long as you they are the same calibers. I have been using a P226 mag in my p229 without any problems. They just stick out way past the grip frame.
