Looking for a revolver

I'm looking to purchasing a revolver. This will be my first revolver.
Particularly i'm looking to buy a 357mag because i like the idea of of going to 357 to 380.
Someone mention of getting the ruger black hawk. I looked it up and its a single action cowboy style gun but i prefer a double action.
One of the things i liked about the black hawk, you can buy the package deal that comes with an extra cylinder so that you can shoot 9mm.
Not sure if other brands of revolvers has that type of option.

I will be using for HD and of course taking it to the range.

Any ideas on a brand?

My price range would be upwards in the 600 or so.

Probably a typo, you mean going from a .357 to a 38 special. Not to a 380, that won't work.

For your price range I'd look at a Ruger GP100 with a 4" barrel.

Most ranges will have one that you can try with both .38 spl and .357 loads. Good luck with your search!

All depends on what you are going to do with it.
Home defense, range gun, CCW etc.
This is a good deal for CCW and not very far from you.

If I was looking for a BRAND NEW 4 inch .357 revolver to use mostly with MAGNUMS, I woould ONLY buy a Ruger GP100

Around $600 would be a ruger gp100 as recommended above. S&W 686 is around $800. I am talking about brand new.

I picked up an S&W 686+. I actually plan to mostly shoot/reload .38 special for it.

Can't go wrong with the Ruger GP-100 though. If there was one in the store when I bought the 686+, I might have bought that and saved some money. As it is, the 686+ has a very nice SA trigger. I can't compare the DA since the only other DA gun I have is an SP-01 which has a super light DA. If it were the 686+ vs 686 vs GP-100 .... tough choice! For value, GP-100 probably.

Another vote for the GP100. I bought mine Nov. 08 it was my first handgun and I still have it. They are great shooters and easy to do a trigger job on if you want to. if you get a GP you won,t regret it. Good luck with your choice.

You need to learn a bit about buying them (do a Google search for "how to buy revolver" for all the info you'll need) but don't discount used revolvers as a less expensive option.

If you are looking for a "range toy" single-action revolvers are a lot of fun. Not an appropriate tool for self-defense however.

The Blackwawk is a fine revolver but the accuracy of 9mm from the 357 is not very good.

For a new double action 357, look at the Ruger GP-100 or the S&W 686. Owners will get into extended pissing matches over which "better" but, owning both, I'd say it's really a matter of personal preference.

The SP 101 is another choice and, if you need a smaller revolver in 357, it is better than the J frame S&W. I love the alloy framed S&W snubbies for carry but my SP 101 is the only five shot revolver I'll shoot full power 357's from.

The used market is always a possibility as long as you know what you are looking at. I recently picked up a couple of nice Model 28s -- a 4" and 6" -- for a pretty darned good price.

HI Ya, I have that Blackhawk, nice gun and accurate. Just not thr quality of my S & W double action revolvers.
For HD I also would want a double action.
Buy used S & W's easier to get especially now that everyone is buying up all the semi's like wildfire.
P.S. I have models 19 and 36.
