    Semi Auto

I would like to purchase a semi auto handgun this week.
    9MM
    Night Sites

Out the door for under $1000.00
I like the Sigs.. They just have a little bit more safety than..
The Glock-not a lot of safety, but an all around simple gun to maintain and shoot.
Those are the only handguns I have experience with.
What about S&W, Tauraus, or Springfield.
My last handgun was a S&W Model 39(1980) that was stolen by a contractor I had working on my house.
    Suggestions?

Glocks don't have an external safety but have a lot of internal safeties. So don't count it out especially that you already have an experience with them. And yes, they are simple. I would recommend a G17 or G19 and then add the night sights. Should cost you $750 - $800 (including tax, DROS, Trijicon night sights) brand new.

The S&W M&P9 is also a good bet. I don't own one but have shot one many times. I like the grips better than Glocks. Should cost about the same all in.

If you want a plastic gun- I'd say check out an xd as well. Grip saftey like a 1911 and a trigger saftey as well.
If you want metal- lots of options too. Look at the cz, beretta, S&W to name a few as well as sig under $1000

No problem!! But there's always many many rentals at ranges, best suggestion is to choose a caliber and shoot as many different makes and models for that caliber, it's mostly personal preference, i thought i was set, then i tried one more and ending up gettin one! its Like test driving cars for what feels best for you.

Depending on how sensitive you are to recoil, I personally love shooting 1911's more than any other handgun style out there. The perceived recoil is much less than any polymer gun I have fired including glocks, springfields, and smith and wessons.

Polymer guns are great service carry weapons and rather reliable, but for pure shooting enjoyment, I find the 1911's are hard to compare. You could easily get a Rock Island 1911 for about $500 and if you wanted to spend more, maybe a nice Kimber TL/RL II or a Springfield Loaded edition.

The Glock is the #1 handgun involved in negligent discharges. It's safety's are pretty useless.

                    Why specifically 9mm?

If you're willing to look at a different caliber, I would highly recommend a Springfield Loaded 1911 or a Kimber 1911

If you really want to stick to 9mm (in order of what i'd get)
                    Sig 226/229
