S&W quality has gone down. However, so has many other companies.

As a point of reference, these are the serrations on my Model 41 that a customer service senior considers "within spec":



Mind you, this is a $1200 .22 pistol.

It shoots fine and is accurate, but something about the serrations doesn't make me feel like the gun was worth $1200.

Um, where have you been? Skilled labor on par with the S&W and Colt of Pre-1960 comes with names like Hamilton Bowen and Doug Turnbull and a four figure price tag for finish alone.

Hanko This was ordered months ago from my dealer. Finally came in. Viewed it quickly during dros. For what I paid and being a CUSTOM SHOP revolver, you think it would be good to go. Just asking for opinions.

It's one of those things where you look at the overall big picture and you don't notice the little flaws.

I took the barrel off, used a flashlight to make sure the bore is shimmering and in absolute perfect condition. The fit was so tight that we had to use a rubber mallet to budge it. Impressed is barely sufficient to describe how I felt about the gun. I even loaded it with a snap cap so that i can dry fire it and make sure the trigger pull is good and acceptable. I also looked at the sight picture to make sure that there aren't imperfections or rough edges.

I think it's funny that some of us expect a layperson to not make quality inspection errors when professionals who get paid to do it let it out the factory in that condition. And then the buyer is somehow more at fault for accepting a gun that the professionals thought were good enough to be displayed at a retail store.

Replace the cylinder? Seriously? A turn ring is wear and tear. They will not do anything to it. Are you planning on shooting it? If so, it is going to get a turn ring. They'll pay shipping both ways, get a good laugh at you in the shop, maybe polish it, send it back, and you can put your own turn ring on after being without your gun for 2 weeks.

If you don't like a turn ring, don't buy a revolver.

so sorry to hear this OP, but I have to agree with scobun. you will make your own ring anyways. the issue would be resolved if you just bought it in person at your local gun store. Just being able to actually put the gun you dros in your own hands before you pay that $25 makes a BIG difference. Ive even had the salesman get me another different s&w 442 when I was getting a new one. He was nice enough to bring out three of them and I chose my favorite. its got all new wear and tear that I put on it

buying online always has its own bundle of variables, sometimes you just get it due to price point and wants

this type of thing has also happened to me when buying from gunbroker or other online retailers before also so I know how it feels.
Sadly .....it might just have been the shipping clerk who just dry fired and finger F'd it. as a firearms collector I feel for ya
