S&W Model 28 is home!

Picked it up yesterday... Smith & Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrolman, 4 inch.

Serial number starts with N289... anyone have an idea of when it's from?

Really need to give it a good cleaning. The ejector rod is a bit sticky. Guy at the shop I got it from says it looks like it was probably never shot so it's just old oil gunk making the rod stick.

Is it safe to shoot any .357 in it? I was thinking of .38 +p for defense (shared with my S&W Mod 60) but also wanted to maybe try the Buffalo Bore heavy loads shared with my 1894c.

Nice score. Don't worry...your Model 28, Highway Patrolman is built on a heavy 44 frame and will easily gobble up any .38/.357 Mag round you care to feed it.

I would estimate 1975-76 for age. It should take any type of 38 special, but you need to cleanout any build-up in the cylinders if you shoot 38 specials. It should shoot most 357 ammo as well, but I would not shoot any bullet larger than 158 grain, and no ammo that says it is for rifles. The model 28 is one of the best Smith & Wesson revolvers made in my opinion. I carried one in my early wheel gun days. Never had a problem with it.

Correct; essentially it's a model 27 N-frame, but with the satin finish, just not with the deep polish royal blue the Model 27s got. It's stout enough to repeatedly eat .357Mag, but it's no Ruger (not knocking it; Smith N-Frames are especially top on my list when it comes to revolvers; but I'm pragmatic and acknowledge their shortcomings - Ruger simply builds a stronger gun that keeps its timing after many more rounds that would knock a Smith N-frame out of whack.)

doesn't mean I shouldn't fire it myself right? Wasn't really looking for a safe queen.

Also want to try some better grips, but wouldn't want to ruin it.

Those would look great. You have excellent taste.

If you are going to shoot a lot of magnums through it, I would recommend rubber type grips that cover the back strap. It helps with the recoil. The bottom line are grips that feel good to you.

1974 DOB, Great looking model 28---My favorite revolver--mine dates from 1966 and still runs perfectly, and it's had LOTS of 357 through it. They have enough mass that recoil is very tolerable and it's S&W strongest revolver.You are going to love it!!!
