Finally got around to trying out my new XDS at the range. After a long search for a thinner CCW pistol, mainly the PPS, I ended up trading my Glock 26 for the XDS. I couldn't be happier with the trade. I only put a hundred rounds through it, but all went off without any undue drama.
I was surprised by how soft shooting the thing is. I think it's more pleasant to shoot than the G26. I'm actually more confident and accurate with it, too. The grip is thinner, but slightly longer so I can kinda get my pinky on there unlike the G26. The trigger is crisp (for a striker gun), light, and intuitive. The grip texture is very effective, yet comfortable and the takedown lever makes for a nice weak-hand-thumb index.
Unfortunately, I was only able to test it with good ol ball ammo; WWB and Tula. Both ran fine and didn't pitch casings off onto the brim of my hat like the G26 did.
There are a couple of peculiarities about this gun that I noticed:
First, the ejection port is curiously small. If I try to clear the chamber by casually pulling back the slide, it ends up stopping as the nose of the bullet presses up against the inside of the barrel hood, then if I release pressure it will fall out of the mag well. It will eject an unfired round properly, but you gotta rack that slide fast and hard. This might not happen with shorter rounds like JHPs.
Second thing was that it prefers that you use the slide release to chamber a round. Something I'm not very used to yet. A couple times when I used the slingshot method it, hung up and took a tap on the butt to get into battery. I'm not riding it forward, but I think that it's just a little gentler due to unavoidable give (limpness, yeah yeah) in my shooting hand wrist. The slide seems to need that sharp drop off of the slide release. That might not happen with JHPs or it might grow out of it with use.
