You'll get some fairly polarized opinions about Kimbers here. Some people love them and others hate them.

I got a Pro Carry HD II last year and it has been flawless so far. I haven't had a chance to fully break it in yet, but I imagine it'll only get better.

If you don't have good aftermarket mags for 1911s already, I highly recommend getting some Wilson or equiv. ones. Kimber mags are junk.

I have a first Gen. Pro Carry and I think it's an outstanding firearm; but as savasyn stated above, invest in quality mags. The Kimber factory mags are an iffy proposition. Be aware that the majority of problems you *might* have, are most likely going to be magazine and ammo related. So if you have problems, don't immediately blame the gun. Try some Wilson Combat mags, switch up the ammo and see if you can find a combo your gun likes.

I have a Custom II and heard the same stuff. I have had no issues with mine using Wilson mags. I agree the Kimber mag was pretty weak looking though I never actually used it. Break it in as recommended with good ammo and mags and you should have no problems.
