    S&W 686 Plus

I want a revolver for the wife cause I'm going away for a while....

Is $789 a fair price or good price for a BNIB 686 plus?

    Should I get a 3" or 4"? Does the 3" really have a noticeable muzzle flip/recoil?

The 2.5" looks much smaller than the 3". Might just be me.

Went to the range this weekend...

Wife is having a really hard time racking the slide of my Glock 19
I told her to rack the slide of my CZ sp01 and my Hi Power just for kicks

That's an excellent gun and the 3" has a large following. And $789 is a good price at the moment.

Good price. Saw one for $900 brand new a month ago.

3" should be good barrel length. I prefer 4" barrel length myself.

Good luck! Teach her how to use it properly. And buy some HD rounds

A 4 inch barrel is the nicest length unless you conceal carry the revolver. Also since you mentioned recoil? " muzzle flip?" no need to even think about magnum loads.

I let her shoot a gp100 and I don't think it really matters....simplicity is key. She doesn't like to shoot guns.

I just want her to be able to defend herself and our son when I'm not around.

I'm planning to train her with a revolver loaded with 38spl reloads....then only load with 357mag for home defense (without telling her that the ammo is diff). She has anxiety when it comes to shooting guns

As an aside about racking slides, is this a technique issue? Zombietactics has posted video of his young daughter easily racking a variety of pistols.

I dont know that I would do this (in fact I wouldnt). If a situation arises she'll get the first shot off and it may scare her enough that she wouldnt get any more off - while I have no experience with it Ive heard full house .357 loads are significantly louder, brighter, and with more recoil then .38+p. Train as you fight - which is why, when possible, I end my training sessions with full house self-defense loads.

Man, I have not seen a 686 of any flavor around here in months. The LGS I was at today has not had one in over 3 months.

Where is S&W shipping these things?

                    I want one

Ironically, I have the same problem with my wife. At the same time, she tried a few revolvers and she felt more comfortable shooting the Glock (even tried a 4" and 2.5" 686+ with .38spl+ rounds and she didn't like the way it felt).

Slightly swaying away from your original question, I bought the Brass Stacker for the Glock and now she can easily rack the slide on it with little effort. It looks ugly, but it works.

I just bought a 686 non + 4" for more than that. I'd grab it just to get it whether it's for your wife or not

Racking the slide is mostly a technique issue. Watch in this video at around 5:08 for a lesson on proper technique:

+1 on this, to the extent funds allow. Great gun imo.

A 3" SW model 13 was the standard issue for the FBI for several years, although it was a .357 the Bureau's ammo was a 38+P 158 gr. Good compromise between concealment and ergonomics.
