Mechtech pistol

I know people have discussed the legality of the carbine conversion units on their pistols before which makes legal pistols into illegal AW's, but I've been wondering why I couldn't cut the stock off of the unit and put it on my pistol. Wouldn't it then just be a long barreled target pistol? No stock, magazine in grip, no threaded barrel = legal pistol. What am I missing?
