WOW, that really s^cks! I just got a 617 with the 4" barrel and had no problems with it.
If I werr you I'd go back to the FFL and have him take care of it or call and b!tch to S&W.
I also have a 6" one and it to has been good to me.
Sorry man I'm sure they will make it right.

I've never had a problem with any of my less-than-2-years-old S&W revolvers, including a 6" 617. It is my single most favorite gun and I'll never trade or sell it for any reason.

If it's truly a problem with the gun, S&W *will* make it right. But don't discount the ammo. I've had a box of the almighty CCI mini mag include a few duds and a few cartridges where the bullet was obviously mis-seated in the shell.

Also, did you clean the gun and wipe it down before first use?

I have a 617 and it goes everywhere with me. I had it rechambered to 22 mag and it's just so handy for anything from snakeshot to bustin coyotes within reason.

Sounds like you just need to have the forcing cone chamfered or opened up a little. Have them check the barrel alignment also. If you don't want the down time to ship it to the factory, any decent gunsmith can do it and the charge should be minimal.
        Good luck,

          617

I had some problems with mine when I bought it a few years ago. After sending it it it has been perfect ever since. I agree it should work right out of the box but they do stand behind what they make, even if unfortunately that means a trip back to the factory be tweaked.

            Riodog,
Who did the conversion for you? Is your 617 the 10 shot model? What kind of accuracy are you getting since the bore size is slightly different?

            Compulsive,
They messed up on the forcing cone in your revolver. It is an easy fix for the service dept. at S&W. When you send it back ask them to check the barrel to chamber(s) alignment while they have it. That might be off enough to cause the dramatic shaving problem that you have.

Sounds like you may have just gotten a lemon. My 617 6" has been pretty solid.
