Barrel size matters on DOJ?

When buying a CA approved gun, does it have to be the EXACT one on the DOJ list? Example there's one I want that's a 4" barrel, but DOJ is only showing the 5" version. Is CA really this strict???????!

How does DOJ know that the pistol is a specific SKU? Does the serial number correspond to the manufacturers submitted paperwork for that model? The SKU is not stamped on the gun.

So, while I am not suggesting an FFL skirt the law but if they mistakenly identify the pistol because of a minor difference in models, who would know? For example, the M&P line has alot of minor design differences and some CA safe models have funky features like the "chamber loaded indicator" or "mag lockout". I would say unless youre familiar with what makes a gun a CA model, you could be mistaken.

It may be easier now, but sometimes the FFL is not as educated and may mistakenly transfer a gun of a different finish than the one listed on the not unsafe list but has the same model #. Different barrel length usually does affect the model name and number for a lot of manufacturers.

An FFL can lose their license over such "mistaken identity." Since they can get audited at any time and they have many guns "in jail," any sloppiness will very quickly get them shut down.

Given the risk/reward curve is very steep, FFL-s make sure they err on the side of caution.

Yup. The roster is very specific, down the the exact make, model and SKU. Anything else you'll have to look to SSE.
