As we all know, the most popular calibers like .22, 9mm, .40, .45 ACP are difficult to find nowdays, but sometimes see .45 GAP still in gunstores. Would you buy a gun in an oddball caliber just for these ammo runs?

Ooooh, .455....it's pointy-er.Comment

I have been thinking about buying a bolt action rifle in a less than common caliber(anything other than .223/.308) so I have a gun I can find ammo for.
For a pistol, I don't know. I don't have much interest in the .45 gap myself.Comment

I shoot .45GAP out of my .45ACP S&W Model 325PD.
Shorter overall length actually shaves a few seconds on reload times.
I also have a .45GAP pistol.
I like .45 caliber handguns. I'm not biased. I enjoy them all.
More ammo manufacturers make .45GAP ammo then 5.7x28mm.

.45 GAP seems to have been a solution in search of a problem. Since modern expanding bullets have more-or-less leveled the playing field between 9mm / .40 and .45ACP, I don't think anyone has made a persuasive case for the .45GAP over the .40.
The .45 GAP case, however, makes for an interesting "alternative" (or maybe "might-have-been") round, a modern version of the old .45 Schofield: a 200 to 230gr bullet at about 700fps at about the same pressure level as the .45ACP. Before the advent of modern bullets, a really good argument could have been made for a shorter and lower velocity pistol cartridge as an alternative to the .45ACP that could have been used in much less expensive non-locked-breech pistols, essentially a scaled-up .380. I know a couple of folks were working on a build-it-yourself pistol using a reduced loading in a slightly shortened .45GAP case, but I don't recall ever hearing of how things played out.RSM

I have considered this very thing. .45GAP is supposed to perform as well as .45ACP but is shorter so it fits into a 9x19-sized handgun grip.
I believed the hype about only buying a common caliber because it was supposed to always be available during a crisis. Now I can't bring myself to use up what little "common" ammo I have.__________________________________________________ _____________________________________

So far I haven't had trouble getting either 7.62x25mm or .22WMR ammo. Other than that, it seems to just be "luck of the draw" these days if a store has anything I might want or need. Still, that is an improvement from a while ago when absolutely nothing seemed to be availible.
I will say, however, that the last time we had an "ammo crisis" there was plenty of availability of 9mm, .40 and .45ACP long before more "exotic" loads like .32ACP or .45 Colt. And if you have been around guns for a while, you will remember things like "the great .380 crisis" when gun manufactures were pumping out guns far faster than the ammo makers could support.
The only ammo you can be sure of is the ammo you have.
There are a number of reasons I keep a cap-&-ball revolver or two around as "just in case" options.RSM
