IDPA - Gen3 or Gen4?

I'm getting a Glock 17 for IDPA. I can get a new Gen3 for $550 or a new Gen4 for $650.

Are the Gen4s worth the extra $100?

I recommend trying both in your hands and see how they feel. If you're going to put a grip on it anyway, it pretty much negates the Gen4 texture - leaving only the adjustable backstraps and dual recoil spring as the differentiator.

Yes, if the Gen4 fits your hand, but the Gen3 doesn't, then $100 extra for the Gen4 is good money spent.

If they both fit your hand, and $100 is a big deal, then I'd get the Gen3 and apply the $100 to night sights.

If you're rich, get the Gen4 with nights sights, 10 mags and a case of ammo.

The gun shop is telling me there is a 2* difference in the grip angle on the Gen4. True?

Look at it this way, with the GEN 4 you get a factory textured grip (no grip tape necessary), larger mag release (extended mag release isn't SSP legal for the G17), and you get an extra magazine. Have you checked prices & availability on Glock mags lately? I have had several GEN 3's & GEN 4's, and the GEN 4 is definitely worth the extra money.

To me it is worth the difference, but I've also payed closer to the Gen 3 prices you quoted. And that's before working p/t in a shop.

it has 2 addtional grip sizes that may change your grip angle.
one day, the glock 3 will simply be discontinued.
best is to try to shoot both.
to most of us, it is simply a tool and don't really care about the little differences in grip.
