    Pre-lock S&W vs. new?

Question please. I am looking for a S&W 642 pre-lock. If I find one on the web do I run into problems with it being pre-lock? The gun is on the approved list, but does pre-lock or with lock have anything to do with it? Thanks for your knowledge.

Model number alone does not determine eligibility, otherwise an older 629 or 29would be allowed in just as the new model is allowed in. Most Smiths will carry a "dash" designation as in 29 - 2, 29 - 10 and so on, so there are over the years many versions of the 29, 22, 25, 27 and such. A general rule with the Smiths (aside from a few of the new hammerless J frames such as the 40) is no lock equals no CA FFL sale, allowed by PPT (or intra - family) only.

To expand on that, the roster currently only has the 642-1 and 642-2 on it - this means that a no-dash 642 is not legal for FFL sale in CA (ppt is okay, of course, as usual).

The dash number (or lack there-of) is present on most modern Smith's, just check out the piece you're interested in.
Rule #3 - Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to fire.
