I figured someone here could ID this pistol for sure. My pops gave this thing to me when I was a kid and he had it since he was one. I think he found the damn thing when he was playing in the dirt if I remember the story right. So the thing is well over 50 plus years old easy. I just ran across it and wanted to see if any of you know what it is. The only thing that isnt weather to hell is a small portion of the serial number. Appreciate the help CG'ers

Help me ID this old pistol

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeanceand furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. Remember to dial 1 before 911.
Forget about stopping power. If you can't hit it, you can't stop it.
There. Are. Four. Lights! -
Start with the serial number. Ask a cop friend and see if he/she can track itComment

I'm not an expert on these older guns but it looks like a short barrel S&W Model 3 breaktop (Schofield).

I'm thinking a Harrington & Richardson revolver due to the hammer, latch and backstrap shape."You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"Comment

Definitely a "S&W style" DA top-break, but could just as well be Iver Johnson, H&R or any one of two dozen other US manufacturers of similar revolvers, to say nothing of Spanish & Belgian copies. These were the "snubbys" of their time, pocket guns for men who didn't want others to know they were armed. Definitely an under-rated gun in terms of utility and effectiveness; not in the same class as a .38Spl but no one in their right mind would want to be shot with even a low-powered .32RF.
Could be a .32 (most likely .32 S&W or .32RF, but there are lots of other "pocket gun" cartridges that were in use between about 1870 to 1920) but lots of these things were made in .38 S&W and .38RF also, and five-shot cylinder tends to be more common on the larger bore guns.
Hard to know without seeing the markings on the weapon. If marking are not readable due to surface corrosion, try wiping with oil, which will often "bring out" markings on rusted surfaces.RSM

I would go with an Iver Johnson , 38 S&W calibre. I have a number of them from relatives that carried them.
Look along the "rib" on the barrel , thats where you might find a faint name on it. They also are BP only guns , and came in a hammerless.Bweise says "I have to say the situation was not at all helped by 22 yr old former Airsoft douches who kept touting here, "But possession is not illegal!" "
