    ar pistol

ok here is a question for you guys. i have a registered 50bmg on a ar lower built from a 80% receiver. the lower has numbers on it for registration purposes and i was wondering if i could build a pistol out of it also. of course it would have a fixed 10 rnd mag in it. any problems with that idea?

I think once it has been assembled as a rifle it can't go back to handgun configuration unless you get it registered as a SBR.

thats what im not sure about because the numbers on the receivers are my own numbers that i came up with. its registered with cal. doj as a 50bmg and as a custom build. so if i could make it into a pistol i wouldn't be breaking any law on the federal level but not sure on a state level.

Actually yah you'd be breaking laws on both fed and state level.

By registering the 80% as a .50BMG you registered it as a RIFLE... so NO you cannot now build a pistol.

The easier way would be to get another 80% receiver, finish it, register it as a PISTOL ONLY lower, build it as a single shot, then once you receive the registration add the gas block....

I'd put it together w/no gas block and let the port vent to atmosphere... once you receive the reg papers back, THEN put the gas block on and have a ball.

Fixed 10rd mag is a must.

        Good luck

        JP

P.S. I have a pistol only lower but no upper *yet* and when I DO finish it, I plan on bolting the lower to the upper @ the front pivot w/a bolt and nylock nut...

JPGlee's got it - NEVER make a rifle into a pistol.

i know its advised to have some numbers on an 80% build, but from what i know of you don't have to register 80% built guns. handguns or rifles, or am i wrong?

I have a question. How does the AR pistol get around the assault weapons laws that mention the ability to accept a magazine outside of the pistol grip? I was just curious what makes these legal, but not the ruger charger.

              sorry to threadjack.

its not detachable if its fixed. it doesn't matter where your fixed mag is i.e inside or outside the grip. as long as its a fixed 10 rnd mag its ok.

If you'd registered it as a pistol way back when, before you built it into a rifle, it would've been ok.

                      Too late now.
