    Encountered Another Weird Rule Today

Shooting range won't let you rent a gun unless you bring your own. They say it's to prevent suicides. Guess it makes sense. I stopped by to pick something up and thought I'd use the range before I left. But didn't have my gun on me.

Most ranges I've been to have this rule. Seems to make sense.

I know some ranges won't rent you a gun if your by yourself for that same reason.

Yep, it is either bring a gun or have a friend there in order to rent. So if you are suicidal, use your own or take your bud out also. Makes complete sense.

So you could bring your own gun and then commit suicide? Then they are not responsible because they did not provide the weapon?

They are not worried about being held "responsible"...

                NorCal ranges have that rule.

Yeah, the suicide things makes sense to me. But never been to a range that had that rule before. California's quirks are starting to show. None of the other ranges I've ever shot at in the last 3 states I've lived in had that one. So what does someone do if they want to take up shooting but don't know anybody who shoots or who's willing to chaperone? Guess they're SOL. That's how I first got into shooting. One day my buddy and I were like... what do you wanna do? Tried thinking of something we've never done — shooting. Dropped by a local range, rented a few guns, and we've been hooked ever since.

plus they would more than likely lose that gun since it was used to commit suicide.

This rule has been around at every range since the 1970s. Also the Insurance company that writes the liability coverage requires this rule.

Suicides happen at gun ranges; that's a fact.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

Maybe in California... But not in Georgia, Florida, or Michigan. I've rented guns at ranges in those states without my own gun MANY times. In fact, one of the ranges in the Metro Detroit area is well-known as a place tourists from Canada shoot at on the weekends for fun. And they don't bring their own guns. The first range I ever shot at down in Atlanta doesn't have that rule. I walked right in and shot maybe 5 or 6 different guns my first time, without my own gun and without a chaperone. So maybe this is a rule here in California. But certainly not in some other parts of the country. Or maybe it's specific to certain insurance companies or policies. But it's certainly not a "rule at every range since the 1970's." Unless you're talking just in California.

And it's not a rule at a certain range in South San Francisco...
