gun as colateral?

My dad had a room mate who needed some money and my dad loaned him the money and held the guys 357 revolver as colateral, the guy ended up moving out and never repaid the debt or asked for the gun back. So my question is how do we go about registering it or checking to make sure its not stolen? I'm relatively new to guns so any info helps.
