    Ok I'll bite; what's a 686 SSR?
    New model S&W I'm guessing.

The 686SSR is at link below.... Looks nice but methinks I'd rather have a regular 686Plus (7 rounds).

"...SSR" stands for "Stock Service Revolver", whatever that means.

        http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/w...05&isFirearm=Y

        Their ad writers say:

The Smith & Wesson Pro Series are the next step up from the production line while still remaining true to "Stock". Bringing competition specifications and features to factory models, the Pro Series offer that ready-to-go package while still maintaining production line integrity.

Ah, ok so a production competition model. Let's check the list.
Ok so it's on the list. Guess it's just not very popular.

Probably a prohibitive cost to keep people from buying it? I like the sound of the marketing blurb, though...

              I want the new non-spacegun 627 - stainless N-frame 8 shot, with a traditionally-lugged barrel.

Will all the version and models, I'm surprised they don't already make that Bill.

The 686 SSR is set up specifically for the stock service revolver (SSR) class in IDPA. IDPA does not allow revolvers with more than 6 rounds. From the factory, the pistol comes with some features that are desirable to many competition shooters, such as chamfered cylinder holes, forged hammer/trigger, and a slightly better trigger pull (the one I've felt wasn't very good however). The 4" barrel is the max allowed for IDPA, and the slab-siding helps the pistol feel a little more like the K-frames in terms of weight.

I like the "space guns," though. I want this, with an unfluted cylinder (maybe titanium), but it keeps moving down my list of "priorities."

Expensive for a non Performance Center gun.

Is the Pro Series between the standard and PC?

They do, as uclaplinker pointed out.

It's just not Rostered yet, unless I get motivated to have a new single-action.

It takes a while for even hardcore S&W fans to get something - and for S&W to get them to dealers.

Their site just got updated a few months back with their new models.

I have to say, S&W does an excellent job of getting their new models to CA Lab testers before they even have them shipping out for sale.
