Is this normal for .45 auto ammo?

The little ring around the casing, is that normal? When I run my finger across it I can feel the "ring". The ammo is 230gn PDX1's. I don't notice the ring on any of my other brands. Does anyone know what it is?

Yep. That's where the bullet ends. For lack of a better term, you're seeing where it was crimped, so to speak.

That's what I thought. I was just curious since my cheaper range ammo doesn't have it but the pricey HP ammo does lol

It is called a cannelure. It is intended to keep the bullet from being pushed down into the case during feeding. If that happens you can encounter pressure spikes than can possibly destroy the magazine and gun. Cannelures can be at the base of the bullet or they can be in a corresponding cannelure in the bullet. In short it is to keep the bullet from moving until fired. It looks like your rounds are of the second type as the bullet continues past the cannelure.

As evident by the large photo, Travis needs a manicure. But, the ammo looks okay.

What a wealth of info this site is! I have been curious about those cannelures but never googled. Glad to know this is normal. Thanks OP for posting and for those who answered.
