I want a Glock 17

The problem is that my LGS doesn't have any in stock. I already posses both a G20 & G21/SF. I would bought one sooner but moneys been a little tight. Now that I can probably afford it they are available at normal prices in the marketplace or just totally unavailable. I've are some G22's but I've read and spoke to reputable people that say they are prone to Kaboom's. The 9mm ammo too had become as expensivr as my 10mm ammo. I think this is the time that I'll practice restraint and patience. Does any one have any experience with either the G17 or G22? I'd like to get the less snappy pistol for my wife and son to defend themselves when I'm not around. Thanks for your imput.

Well your asking a question you already know the answer to.. The g22 is.40 and some day its snappy.. So the g17 is going to be your better choice.. But why not a Glock 19? I personally love my g23 and my g19... The 23 for me is better...

Good idea considering ammo costs these days. Another option would be a Glock 19.

The Glock 22 (.40) is of course more powerful than 9MM (more weight ususally 165 or 180 grain as opposed to 9MM which is mainly 115 grain).

Talking about Winchester white box range ammo. In defensive rounds you can get some good 9MM that has some good ballastics with a hollow point that opens up. More costy of course.

And if you run 10MM you already know the .40
.40 can also be bought in excellent defensive hollow points.

The Glock 17 (and 19) are probably the most popular handguns on the planet. The just run and run and run.

But the GLOCK 22 (and 23) are very popular among Law Enforcement. .40 is the caliber for the cops these days. One advantage to the Glock 22 that I've noticed is when 9MM is sold out, you can sometimes find .40 on the shelf.

You can also buy a conversion barrel for the G22 from LoneWolf to run 9. Mine runs 100% so far. An extra $115 and you do have to get some G17 magazines as well.

The Glock 22 (and 23) being so popular these last 20 years in Law Enforcement means more of these .40s are being shot everyday; in training and on the streets. Early on back in the 90s departments started switching over the to Glock 22. and out of thousands and thousands of these guns, a few had KaBoom issues; usually because of Departments buying reloads that often had a double charge or other issue that raised the pressure enough to rupture the case. When the case is over-charged (on any round) it needs 'case support' (the chamber that surrounds it) especially around the BASE of the case. What happened in a very few Glocks in .40 caliber was a ruptured case that caused a KaBoom event.

Glock took a look at this issue and over the years they made lmprovements in the Case Support on the .40 Glocks.

See this photo and notice the difference.? This is no longer an issue.

On another subject, if you own a GLOCK 20 you can safely run .40 thru it without a barrel swap. Use the same magazines as the 10MM.

What does that mean? You talked to a guy at a gun store who heard from a guy at a range about a cop his brother in law once knew that somebody blew up a G22? You need to buy an AirSoft replica and quit talking to morons and surfing the internet. 1911's Kb, so do revolvers and any other weapon that is loaded overpressure.

How about some facts? Glocks are used by 85% of LEO in the US, and about half the competitors in USPSA and IDPA. They run for hundreds of thousands of rounds without issues. The G22 and G17 frame are the SAME thing. Only the upper and magazine determine the caliber. You can switch the tops out all day long. 40S&W ammo too expensive for you? Get a 9mm conversion barrel for the G22.

I ran a G21 to over 125,000 rounds and have 2 G17's that are over 75,000 rounds.

Maybe you should start with a .22LR and learn how to shoot first.

G17 and G22 owner here (G19 and G34 too).
I love my G17, has approx 22,000 rounds thru it.
Never felt the same love for the G22. "Snappy" is a good term for it. It rarely left the safe, so I sold it recently and put the funds towards a Les Baer Custom Carry.
I haven't shot anything but the LB since buying it.
The G17 is much better suited to your wife and son than the G22, and like others have said, the G19 might be even better yet due to the hand size of your wife and son.
