    Single Shot Exemption

So I'm trying to order a custom pistol from a well-known production builder. They claim they can't sell me a non-CA Model pistol that I can have exempted under Single-Shot unless they send it to a non-CA FFL, who then sends it to an in-state FFL. They say they can't send the pistol directly to an FFL here in CA. Can anybody offer their experience? Is this normal?

Is SSE only valid from gun shop to gun shop and not from manufacturer to gun shop?

IIRC they can send it to a FFL here in ca but they have to have a special FFL license (I think its FFL07) your normal gun shop is a FFL01

what part of CA you in ?? so someone can point you towards a good FFL to do the SSE
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. They could send it if they wanted to. Some manufacturers just choose to make it company policy not to send to CA FFLs because it's easier to set a blanket policy saying "No." That's why a lot of FFLs who do SSE have to order through distributors.

Excuse you?! They should be happy I'm willing to give them my money. Not the other way around. I don't *have* to give them my business.

Maybe I should go through one of their "Master" Dealers, then. There are a few in the my area (San Francisco). I was planning on ordering direct, though.

What kf6tac wrote is the answer. Several MFG's will not ship to CA.

You can use Table Rock Arms in Oregon. Ryan is a great guy and can also convert the handgun to SSE form and ship it to your CA FFL. You just have to make sure that your FFL will accept an off-roster handgun that has already been converted to SSE. If your in the bay area I would suggest Kevin Smith for the transfer and DROS.

Just have them send it to Table Rock Arms and he will send it to your FFL of choice...It is really just a CYA for them, not everyone is an expert on CA gun laws.

Ok, first... who said anything about Wilson? Second: this thread is about one thing: SSE. If you want to start an off-topic flame war take it somewhere else.Yes, it is a company's prerogative to refuse service to whomever they see fit and it is their prerogative to ship anywhere they see fit. But this isn't about prerogative. This is about the law.

My question is about SSE and the law. Is it the law that a manufacturer must ship an off-roster firearm to a non-California FFL and then that FFL can ship to an FFL in-state? Or does the law not care?

                  That's the topic here.

Thank you, gentlemen. That was helpful. Who is Kevin Smith and where can I contact him? And I was under the impression that when you convert a gun to SSE, the parts that you swap out when you convert it back are returned to the shop? If not, I presume it would be more expensive?

Kevin Smith is a home based FFL in Martinez and has been used for many SSE transfers from Ryan at Table Rock. I don't have his number handy but you can search for him on google or Calguns. There are other FFL's that will accept a handgun in SSE format but most want to charge as if they are doing the SSE modification themselves. Kevin Smith treats it as a normal out of state transfer. Last time I used him for this it was $75 for the transfer and SSE DROS.

Table Rock sends the handgun with the extended barrel and the blocked off magazine well (along with your oem barrel). After you pick-up your gun you convert it back to a semi-auto and ship the SSE parts back to Ryan at Table Rock.

Ryan will also disassemble any standard magazines that hold over 10 rounds. Those are shipped directly to you separate from the handgun. You can then block them to 10 rounds yourself if needed.

                      Thanks

I've been in contact with Ryan. I may just have to get a California model because SSE is in jeopardy. And nobody knows if that new bill will pass by the end of the year or not. A custom build will probably take longer than that. And I don't want to be stuck with a gun I can't legally take possession of. So a Cali model is the prudent choice. Sucks. I really wanted a gun built with custom options.
