    RIA 1911

So been looking into buying a realtive cheaper 1911 to play around with. I already have a few nice 1911 in 45, I don't own a 9mm and this time I was thinking of getting a Rock Island Armory 1911 in a 9mm. Question is does anyone know where to find one in Northern California? Seems most places online will not ship to CA. I tried looking up and do not see these guns on the list of shame to own here so whats the deal? Any ideas on how to get one of these? Anyone know of a gun store that could order one of these for me?

    Thanks in advance.

You can get them thru an FFL that will do a single shot exemption. It will likely run you $100 more than the prices people in other states are paying, but they are out there. My brother in Missouri bought one for $493 OTD last month and the deal included an extra mec gear magazine. That was the tactical model not the GI which was available at $45 less.

1). Shop around your local FFLs for the least expensive Single Shot Exemption. Some won't even do it.

2). Shop the dealers on Gun Broker and make the arrangement. I'm taking up residency in NV this summer and will buy my brothers. I've wanted one for a long time. Oh and my move to NV - permanent.

Look into a RIA .38 Super and convert it to 9mm. It might be more cost effective than SSE. But then again it might not.

I was able to get an off roster RIA 9mm 1911 through a private party transfer via the CalGuns marketplace. Sometimes you will find one there but be prepared to pay a pretty penny. Here's my RIA 9mm 1911:

The other route is converting a .38 Super to a 9mm like others here have mentioned. That's doable but you'll also be spending some coin for the parts and the gunsmithing. You can't just drop in a new barrel and magazine and expect it to be 100% reliable. There are some small changes that a qualified gunsmith should make (EX: fitting the locks on the new barrel to the frame, fitting the barrel link and pin to ensure proper cycling, fitting the new bushing on the new barrel to the frame), and possibly, some fine tuning (maybe a new 9mm/.38 Super extractor, a new 9mm/.38 Super firing pin & pin stop, a new 9mm/.38 Super extended ejector, ETC) which are also best left to a gunsmith to do; unless you have the techincal skills and the tools & jigs to do so.

For my RIA 9mm 1911, I did a lot of upgrades. Most important, I used a Kart Easy Fit Barrel Kit, 9mm non-ramped (http://www.brownells.com/handgun-par...-prod7611.aspx), an Ed Brown 2 piece guide rod (http://www.brownells.com/handgun-par...-prod1312.aspx), and Metalform "Springfield"-style 9mm Magazines (http://www.brownells.com/magazines/h...prod20448.aspx). Also take into consideration, , for a 9mm 1911, you need to use either a 10LB or 12LB spring, whereas for a .38 Super, you need to use either a 14LB or 16LB spring (FYI: a .45 ACP 1911 uses between a 15LB - 18LB spring). I recommend ISMI (http://www.brownells.com/handgun-par...-prod7553.aspx).

I love my 9mm 1911 and you will too after you're done building it. Good luck on your 9mm build. Cheers! --1911ShooterPhil

Not in my case. I literally "dropped in" a RIA 9mm barrel from Sarco with a Wilson Combat link/pin then bought some 9mm metalform magazines and my 38 super/9mm RIA GI has been 100% reliable for well over 2000 rounds.

            No smithing required

OP: Wild Bills in Elk Grove does SSE if you are near Sacramento you could give them a call or drop in.

              It is

I think its a far better option if you want to settle for the GI model, but i don't think they make a 38 super in the tactical model?

From Armscor's website, you are correct they do not make a 38 super tactical model. But they do have a 10mm, lol.

                Kind of weird, IMO.

I think the RIA 1911 GI is decent. Some clowns will diss the gun because its made in the Philippines blah blah blah. It's a good gun.

I second the RIA GI being decent hand gun. Never had a issue with mine

Tactical and GI are both Phillipine made. If it works and works well I don't really care. They have had a few reported issues but most are reported to work as well as higher costs guns.

The GI vs the Tactical model is a no brainer for me, the later comes with the better sights, better trigger and better hammer for $40 maybe $50. You probably can't add one of those features for that price - too bad they don't do the 38 super in their tactical model.

Has the Rock Island 1911 9mm ever been on the approved list? I couldn't find it on the recently removed list, but they are for sale here in California. I've seen them at Gun World in Burbank and at Gunslingers in Azusa and maybe Ammo Bros.

Had a tactical 9mm. Ran through 400 rounds flawlessly before I sold it. Like my CZs a little more.

A used 9mm 1911 came to me with extraction problems. RIA fixed it no charge and paid ALL postage (sent Fedex to my door to pick it up). I'm a believer. I have a .45acp RIA as well. Both are working well. Buying used it's good to know that the manufacturer has your back.
