EMP 9 Problems

Well I finally tracked down a brand new EMP 9 and took it to the range today. I had shot one before - just feel in the love with the feel and accuracy. I was apprehensive because of all the break in issues I have read about. Good news - put 200 rounds of FMJ (3 brands) and the gun functioned flawlessly! Bad news - grouped one inch left and 2-3 inches high at around 8-9 yards. Huh? I thought EMPs were tack drivers. Sights look fine but I'm scratching my head on this one. Has any EMP owners experienced this type of problem? I know - send it back to SA.

Best way to make sure:
Use sand bags or something that will support your shooting hands and check the grouping afterwards.

If that is going to be your HD/Carry weapon... shoot JHP (no less than 200 rounds).

I was about to purchase EMP as well, but saw many FTF in shooting range when they were using JHP rounds so I decided to buy 4th Gen sub compact Glock instead.

Yeah I might try the sand bags but I'm not a novice - been shooting for many years and I have never had a handgun group like this. My PM9 groups fine. I plan on working in the JHPs soon but function does not seem to be a problem. I will give it a few more rounds and try different ammo. Thanks for the inputs.

BTW, I was wondering how long it would take before I got a " get a Glock or 45" post. Fowsweep you win lottery - check is in the mail!

Now the front night sight no longer "glows". I know SA will take care of it but geez what a let down after all the hype.

It's probably just dirty, dude (the front sight)

And if your groups are tight but just off center, you probably just need to drift the sights a little. No big deal.

If your groups are left and up and also all over the place, it's probably not the gun that's inaccurate.

I get similar groupings on my EMP 9mm - high and to the left. If I aim for center of mass on a silhouette target, I can predictably shoot tight groups into the left shoulder. I think it shoots high because Springfield sights their guns for 6 o'clock hold. I'm not sure why it shoots left, but I haven't tried drifting my rear sight yet because the rear sight set screw head on mine is a little stripped - the Allen wrench that comes with the gun just spins in the screw head. I also want to try shooting mine with a little more finger on the trigger; I generally shoot my guns with the very end of the pad of my trigger finger on the trigger.

The center of your finger (distal phalanx) should be on the center of the trigger.

I'm not actually that far off, then - I guess I sort of consider that part to be the "end" of my finger, rather than the center of the joint. In any case, I usually shoot with the distal phalanx on the center of the trigger on all of my guns, and the EMP is the only one that pulls left.

Cleaning the sight was the very first thing I tried. Momma did not raise no dummy. Besides, I have had the gun for only a week and shot it once. I have never seen a night sight go dark that fast from dirt.

It groups pretty well but I think it is too far off from POA for a supposedly high quality firearm. I have shot EMPs before and the POA was never that far off from POI. Hey kf6tac, I'm suprised you are OK with your gun. Did you ever try sending it back to SA?

I'm not trying to be an EMP basher here. I want to love this gun. I am just frustrated right now because of the huge let down in performance. I wanted to replace my PM9 with this because I felt it would be more accurate especially with follow up shots. So I paid premium dollar (I know my choice) for a gun that is not worth the money (at least right now). Hopefully SA will fix it and I will stop my whining!

Batman where do you live? I'm in the bay area. We can trade EMP9 to see where you stand. I took me about 350 rounds before It got used to the shooting high. Before that, I never shot a small gun before, always full size.

Sigma6 - that would be a great experiment! Unfortunately, I'm in the Central Valley but thanks for the offer. I'm still confused by the posts stating this gun shoots high. When I got my permit many years ago I shot several sub compacts including the EMP and none shot this high. Kf6tac, do you have any more details on your statement that SA sights them this way?

kf6tac, I'm suprised you are OK with your gun. Did you ever try sending it back to SA?

I called them up about having the sights drifted, but they were really recalcitrant and told me to bench it and have someone else shoot it first, to make sure it's not shooter error. I haven't gotten around to bench shooting it yet because I don't have access to the facilities (only indoor ranges near me and not enough time to drive a little farther ti an outdoor range), and haven't bothered anyone else to shoot it yet.

Sigma6, where in the bay area are you? I'm in San Mateo, and might be interested in having you take a few shots from mine.

Not much, except that I think there's a page in their manuals that talk about six o'clock hold and say that their guns are sighted for it.
