Impressions:
Glock 30 - nice shooter. Grip force is required with my fat hands or I get REALLY bad slide bite. Initial outing with it about a month ago was bad - multiple mis-feeds from several mags (not limp wristing) that I attributed to the new aftermarket guide rod and spring (marked malfunctioning mags accordingly but those same mags functioned perfectly this time around). This time there was no issues that I can remember. Grouped well with stock non-night sights. I dont like the 10-rd mags much and a friend suggested 9rd mags with pearce +0 extensions since they sit flush with the grip.
Glock 36 - it KICKS! I think the recoil is stronger than my shield .40 - although its been a bit since Ive shot my shield. Groups werent great and I'll need few more sessions with it to bring them tighter. The roughness/grip of the pinky extension is very noticeable - I prefer the stock extension to the +1 aftermarket one. Size wise its about the same size as a G19 - it has fit all the G19 holsters I have well BUT the G19 didnt work in the single G36 specific holster I have. What I liked was, for some reason, I had no slide bite from it. However I like beaver tails - I think they help me control the weapon much better since i take such a high grip. There were a few problems with feeding - I did notice excessive mag movement on the mags with the +1 extensions but Im unsure if this is what caused it - since the slide and recoil assembly had no malfunctions on the G30 frame Im assuming the mags (or extensions) are the issue.
Glock 66 - best of both worlds. Lighter weight then the G30, more control and faster follow-up shots then the G36. I fired 12 rds (2 mags of 6) in at a moderate pace - well aimed shots and not double tap speed - from the G36 then put the slide onto the G30 frame and did another 12 rounds (2 mags of 6). My groups with the G66 were significantly tighter. Also, the feeding problems the G36 had was not apparent with the G66. Recoil was right in the middle between the stock G30 and G36.
Plan....
Right now Im planning to rotate the 36 slide between the 2 frames depending on my needs since the 36 frame is much easier to conceal then the 30 frame. However, the 30 is able to accept 21 mags so thats a plus depending on my needs. 36 slide will definitely be wearing some Trijicon HD's shortly. I also have Talon rubber grips for both - I run the Talon rubber on my shield and its been good to me so far - the next best thing to a good stipple job.
Im debating on picking up an extended 10mm conversion barrel and ejector and placing them into the 30 slide. Does anyone have any experience with this? Ive heard mixed review regarding the reliability of this conversion - however it seems that either an ejector from a G29 or a modified G30 ejector takes those issues away.
For the RIA - I love it. controllable, accurate with stock GI sights (although its shooting to the left about 1" @ 10yds - nothing thats not easily fixable). It was getting pretty dirty from the reloads and I could feel the difference from the rounds going into battery from the initial firing and the final firing. Towards the end of my range session you could feel the round getting hung up slightly before feeding - however there were no malfunctions of any type.
- projected change: new safety and trigger. The small safety is adequate but I want something a little larger. The short curved trigger is...adequate. Im having a flat trigger installed on my other 1911 and, depending on how that feels, Im going to go with a flat trigger in the RIA. I will eventually be going with a different sight set just to give me something larger to see on the front, but as of right now the standard GI sights are adequate for range use. I dont see myself carrying this pistol any time soon.
