Owning a handgun under 21?

Hey guys, I'm an adult, but not yet 21. I want my next gun to be a revolver or maybe a Glock. If I understand the law correctly, I can't purchase a sidearm, but I can own one, right? So that pretty much leaves a transfer from a parent as my only choice. If they're blatant about transfering to me and transfer it over the day after they buy it, could they get in trouble for straw purchasing? Would it be worth waiting for my birthday or xmas to formally get it as a gift? And lastly, to get it transferred to me would I have to do the same paperwork and background checks an original buyer would, or is it just like submitting a quick form to the DOJ and calling it a day?
