if i had an 686, i would have bought a 617. all the research i did said it was good.

i got a pre-MIM model 63 instead as i have a model 60 .357........

I have one, it is great. It is an excellent target revolver. I have the 10 shot model, which I recommend over the 6 shot just for practicality.

Try to get one used if you can, they are kind of pricey new.

If you just want an accurate plinker (good, accurate, but not a target grade gun) get yourself a Ruger Single Six. That is a nice, decently accurate gun for plinking, hunting etc. It is also half the cost of the 617. I had a Single Six and loved it. I recently sold it to someone else here on Calguns who would shoot it more than I do so it went to a good home

The 617 is kind of fussy about what ammo it likes and doesn't like. But with good ammo it is really excellent. The Ruger Single Six will eat anything without a hiccup.

I have the 2" and the 3" and love them both. They are especially fun with colobri's They weigh nothing! The real problem is forgetting you have it on.

I have a 617-10 which was a special run for Lew Horton.
It's a stainless ten shot, but finished in black.

It looks like a 586 if you did not notice the extra notches and flutes on the cylinder.

I have a 617, 6 shot, 4 inch barrel and I just love it to death. EErrr it's chambered for the 22 magnum round and even though it's SS, it's a great piece to have with when bird season is here as the snakes are still out and about. Does a fine job on jacks and coyotes within reason.

Smith 617 is the polar opposite of crap. I have the 10-shot 6" one, and it is silly accurate. It's pretty heavy, so it has less recoil than a pellet gun. Very fun gun indeed.

My 6" 617 10-shot was my first ever gun, and I will never sell it. It is pretty, it is strong, it has a nice action out of the box, and it *is* a tack driver.

Mine doesn't like Remington bulk, but eats through *anything* else I've fed it. With a 10-shot speedloader and some loading blocks I can burn through half a box of Federal bulk in 30 minutes, and I'm smiling the whole time.

Whether you find one used or decide to pop for a new one, you will not regret the investment.

I have a 617 4" and it's a really nice gun, though I havent shot it that much. Mainly bought for my gf to practice with, since there is an almost identical gun (4" 686) available, should the need arise

617-10 6", fantastic little gun. Took 15th rimfire at the Steel Challenge with it a couple years ago, of course Jerry Miculek took 2nd with his.

Yeah, I have added drastically to the non Colt collection since this picture was taken. I like wheelguns but mostly Colts. Someday I will have to get a picture of all the ponies and snakes.

The only wheel gun I have sold was a Smith model 17 mfr. in 1930. It really needed to be in a collectors safe and not mine.
