    Handgun .22lr with Removable Compensator Legal Question

    Hello,
    Can someone in the know answer and point me to the correct reference regarding compensators for .22lr handguns? I think it is okay for the barrel of handgun in caliber .22lr to have a compensator that may be removable. I ask because I'm interested in purchasing a "bully barrel" (from out of state) for my S&W model 41 and it has a compensator on it and I believe the compensator isn't permanently fixed but removable. Does CA say I can't have one of these?

      Does the compensator mount via a threaded barrel?

      Check out threaded barrel stuff in the flow chart.

          Looked at the flowchart. If the compensator is mounted via a threaded barrel then that is illegal and a no go? Correct?

          If the compensator is mounted without threads via a set screw it is legal ??? Correct?

          If the compensator is mounted with threads and a set screw or pin it is illegal??? Correct?

              If the compensator is permanently affixed to a threaded barrel it should be ok as the threaded barrel no longer has "the capacity to accept". What constitutes permanence is the question. High temp silver solder, or blind pinned and welded should be ok. Ca DOJ let Walther use epoxy on the P22 barrel fiasco. Anything less is probably a gamble.

                  You can have a treaded barrel, add the comp, pin and weld, and you'll be fine, as long as you can't unsrew the comp.

                      It's also legal to have a threaded barrel on a fixed magazine pistol. Not that you would want that but it's one way.
