    1911 . THEN and NOW

As a very young man , I remember when everything that had to do with self defense and target shooting was around 1911.

Guns from Novak's, Wilson, Swenson, Chow etc.

1911( and Custom 1911) was a top topic of the most popular gun magazines.

Some authors made it sound like if You are not armed with custom 1911 in 45ACP, You are at some real disadvantage, You are not cool, not a "Real pro" and You are not likely to survive are armed encounter.

Just how popular is a 1911 today as a CARRY/CCW pistol? (WITH PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY CARRY CONCEALED)

I do not carry, but all of my friends in "free states" that do, carry their 1911's proudly.

As the saying goes, "a 9mm may expand, but a 45 does not shrink".

If I ever get a chance to carry, my Cbob will be at my side!

As I trained more and took more courses, I stopped carring the 1911...

When you shoot a non square range drill response....

That is shooting 2-6 round responses into the target while moving, I found that the 1911 was empty....quickly...

I guess if one is newer to shooting and did not own any standard cap wonder 9 / 40 magazines... the 1911 still would not be my pick...

With the articulating barrel of the Browning High Power/ Glock/ Sig, etc the feed ramp is much more forgiving with ammo choices....
The Glock also has significantly less parts than the 1911 and is - dare I say - less prone to jams (items requiring a gunsmith to repair)

I am not saying that you can not get an 100% reliable 1911, but for the $600 mark, I would prefer modern designs to the classic design of the 1911

        just my thoughts.....

Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
        (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

In the 70's the 1911 was the cat's meow. But, if you had a stock Goverment 1911,one had to spend serious money for it to run on ANY kind of ammo one wanted reliably. Lead WC, SWC, ect.
The ejection port was lowered, barrel was throated, trigger job....ect,ect. Now days most 1911s come with these mods. My 1911's are now a safe queens.
I now EDC Glocks. Most in 9mm with one Glock 36 in 45acp. Cheaper, lighter and more mag capacity without the need to modify to make them reliable. Just my .02 cents.
          OP....you forgot Jeff Cooper

I still carry a commander size 1911 more often then not, the current one since 2001. I do sometimes carry a Glock and feel well defended with either.
I have done a lot of training and do appreciate the standard capacity mags of a Glock or comparable newer style gun. But also realize that I am not going back to Iraq anytime soon and am responsible for every round I fire. The chances of me running and gunning and emptying my 15 round mag are few and far between state side. I am good with 9 rounds of .45 and two spare 8 round mags.
Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.

I still carry a full-size 1911 in a milt sparks holster 95% of the time.

But I do keep a Glock when needed.

The fate of the wounded rest in the hands of the ones who apply the first dressing.

I carry a commander size 1911 every day, in a Milt Sparks SS-II. Occasionally I wish the thing was lighter, but that's as far as my complaining ever goes. I can't say the same thing for other pistols.

One of the big reasons I don't use a 1911 for defense is because I can't stand the thought of having to hand it over to the cops after using it. IMO, you need to be comfortable with never seeing a gun again if you use it in self-defense and my 1911s mean too much to me.
