9mm Cleaning Question..

A friend of mine who just picked up his 1st handgun had asked a question. Thinking I would know since I had a handgun already...

He asked if a .380 rifle brass bore brush can be used to clean his 9mm pistol bore? ... The gun store only had a KleenBore .357/.380 rifle bronze bore brush & the salesperson had told him it would be fine for him to use it.

I didn't have answer but told him I'd ask CG for clarification.

It should work fine, just use a bit of caution since the rifle brushes are longer and can bend. It won't hurt anything in the barrel if it does, (unless it is a real extreme bend) could damage the threads on the rod though.

Care to elaborate why a 9mm barrel doesn't need a brushing if shooting plated or jacketed bullets?

I usually use a brass jag, and can get a barrel 95% clean with four patches and some hoppes #9 (wet-dry-wet-dry.)

Every 1000 rounds I might run a bore brush through a few passes.

Only real differences between a rifle and a pistol bore brush is that the rifle brush is significantly longer and in some brands the rifle bristles are a bit stiffer. A "pistol" brush is actually a revolver brush and is sized to fit in the older short frame cut-out of guns like the I-frame S&W. I actually usually use rifle brushes to clean my handguns a lot of the time, since I find the longer brush no disadvantage in am automatic or a revolver like a modern J-frame and I find the longer brush does a better job a cleaning out the chambers in the cylinder of a revolver.
