Value? Ruger Security Six 6" (.357 mag)

I have another value question for all you experts out there. I have this new found desire to obtain revolvers from my father's era. With that said, I would like to add a Ruger Security Six 6" .357 Mag to the safe.

In your personal opinion, what is a reasonable price to pay in California.

Safe Queen price?
Shooter price?

I paid around 350.00 for mine a year and half ago.
4" barrel, no instructions on barrel, blue is 90% shape and fantastic shooter,
excellent mechanical condition.

There was a 9mm shorter barrel one at my local dealer going for 300.00 that sat in the case for a while. Stainless, and excellent condition.

I would say the 400.00 to 500.00 range is to be expected these days.

If it has the original box, papers, etc. in 98% plus condition.....$450 to $500.

Shooter price?

Reasonable wear, solid lock up / timing, all original parts.....$350 to $400.


These guns were Ruger's 'Bread & Butter" 38spl / 357 mag revolvers for many years. If maintained, these guns will last a lifetime. Excellent revolvers. Ruger's answer to S&W's model 10, 15, 19, etc.

Killer Bee - thanks for your detailed input. I don't bother with the Auctions as all the FFL dealers I've talked with have outrageous transfer fees and on top of that they charge CA sales tax.

Do you know of an FFL dealer in the San Diego area that is pleasant to work with?

Great choice! I have all of my father's revolvers, including his stainless Security Six. It's one of my favorites.

Security Six is same frame as Police Service Six and Speed Six. The sights and grip shape change, not the frame.
Values on these Rugers are higher in CA, since you can only buy them FTF from a private party.
I still own a Speed Six, I regret selling my Security Six. They are great revolvers. Luckily, I also have my GP100.

I think you did OK.
$450 gets you a beater gun or $525 for NIB. I'll spend the extra $75 every time.
