One nice thing about the M&P, (I don't know about the other brands) but with a simple barrel swap and new mags you can shoot 9mm out of your M&P40. No need to change slide or recoil spring.
Disclaimer: For all you know, I am just some dude on the internet. The advice I give is worth what you have paid for it!

Ok, this is too good. Do you happen to know the price on the kit to do the swap? That will sell me on the M&P40 for sure. Today is the last day Turners has it on sale for 499.

LAX Gun Range has Sig2022, XD, and Glocks for sure. They may also have the MP. Give them a call. They have good reload prices and lots of guns to choose from. The downtown LA range also has a huge selection of handguns, although, I am not sure they have the 4 listed above. Downtown range maybe closer to you, but they don't care for their equipment, when I went there and rented, both guns were not zero'ed at all. So take that into account if you go there to try out these pistols.

Sig also do that. You can convert your Sigpro from .40 to .357 or 9mm.

          .40-.357 just barrel
          .40 - 9mm barrel and mag

I have the Sig SP2022 and Px4 Storm Subcompact, both in .40 cal and I like them both. I really like the DA/SA. That being said, If I were to choose one over the other, the Sig has a special place in my heart (maybe because it was my first gun). I would honestly feel comfortable recommending either one.

Is this really possible? I have looked into it and couldn't find a concrete answer.

Ok, love this input, thank you all very much! So the Sig also has a barrel conversion, that's great, because I really want the sa/da.

I had an issue with the Glock 23, it could be just me but I am left handed and for what ever reason everytime i fired that gun the slide would clip my thumb knuckle. After one 10 rd mag of shooting I was done. I have talked with several people and they all said they never had that problem I was told buy a gun dealer that he has heard that happen with lefties. I never had that problem with any gun. Friends of mine that do have that fun think its a great gun, and You can easily convert to a glock 19.

I do have a Springfield XD .45 and I have had no problems, I had tons of experience shooting a Beretta in the Military and I had a ton of problems. Im sure they have better quality control no and maybe the guns issued to us were heavily worn, but that has put a damper on my feelings towards Beretta.

It looks like I am sold on the SigPro2022. Not too sure if trying it out is going to help or hinder much as it has been over 10 yrs since I have hit the range. So anything is going to feel different. And with my lack of experience, over time I may end up not liking certain qualities of the pistols anyway. So I am going out tonight to take my HGS test and have them order me a brand new shiny SigPro2022 with night sights. Hopefully in a few months I will go back and pick up my conversion for the 9mm. I cannot thank you all enough. Hopefully Turners gets it in soon, was given a 2-8 week lead time. Once it does come in, I will certainly post pics of my new baby! Thanks again everyone!

I've seen the 9mm barrels going for about $60-70 online. Mags are about $30. Problem right now is that they are out of stock, but I figure that is a temporary problem. The .40S&W barrels are about $85. These prices I saw at midwayusa.com. There are probably other sites that sell the parts for barrel swaps on the M&P.

In the end, go with what you feel will work for you the best. Have fun and enjoy the sport.

DA/SA is definitely harder to master than SAO or striker-fired, but as they say at Front Sight "any gun will do if you will do." Key thing I would suggest, however, is that in the next year you spend at least as much on training and practice as you do into the pistol itself.

Personally, I prefer 9mm over .40 simply because from an "outcomes" analysis there really does not seem to be any significant difference in the effectiveness of the two calibers with equal quality ammunition. Results from being hit with top of the line personal defense loads in 9mm, .40 and .45 are indistinguishable even to the ER surgeons. To be effective in stopping the fight you need to plan on making two to three good hits on the goblin with any handgun. With 9mm you 1) can shoot a bit faster because of the lower recoil and 2) make more hits because you can afford to practice more.

Yes, but only when you are going from a .40 to a smaller round. You need the full kit to convert from a 9mm to a .40.

Still go shoot it You'll have some fun and find out if you really like the Sig or not. I wanted a P99 so bad until I had the chance to shoot one. Maybe I just got a poorly maintained p99, but it felt like a 11 lb trigger even in SA. I need to give it another try, but it really turned me off after that.
