HK USP Gurus - Question about the safety

    For you guys who know HK pistols;

Is the safety lever reversible on the USP pistols, so that the gun could be used by a lefty without going to a gunsmith?

    Thanks for any information

I'm pretty sure it can be swapped to the other sides, but I'm not sure if you could do it w/o going to the gunsmith - at least I couldn't... lol

    from Wiki:

By using a modular approach to the internal components,[1] the control functions of the USP can be switched from the left to the right side of the pistol for left-handed shooters. The USP can also be converted from one type of trigger/firing mode to another. This includes combination of double-action and single-action (DA/SA) modes and double-action only (DAO) modes.[2]

That's the advantage of cleaning your guns in the day time! Mine was on my desk :-p

The Elite and Expert series guns come from the factory with ambidextrous safety. I personally find it a pain as decocking causes the safety to dig into my shooting hand.

Of course, I usually decock by pointing my gun in a safe direction and slowly dropping the hammer.

I think this can be changed without the aid of a gunsmith.

changing the safety axle on the USP is pretty straight forward, but it's been so long since I saw it being done, I can't remember

had my registered 45 tactical with vortex set up this way ~

my favorite set up is variant 11 which is actually a cross between 3&4.
no safe, DA/SA, decock only, with ambi controls.

sadly in a momentary lapse of reason, I sold the tactical....

              Yes it can be done.

              Variant 10.

You need a left side safety lever.

I'm pretty sure it's not reversible and requires the proper lefty lever. Especially when you look at it removed, the slits in the bar wouldn't line-up correctly.

                  Midway sells the ambi.

You will have to buy a left handed safety lever. HK wouldn't sell me one to do it myself and insisted I send it in.
I finally found a guy at the OC gun show who sells lots of HK parts and he had one. Not cheap (but what is with the HK name on it).
It isn't hard to do if you know how to detail strip the pistol.

alot of parts pop out once you take that safety lever out.

You can not just flip the lever over, you need to buy a lefty or ambi control setup.

Not difficult to do yourself. Need a small punch and 10min of your time.
