CCW "Toolbox"

Hey all,

Putting together my full 4 gun "toolbox" for 99% of carry situations.

So far I have a Kahr P45 that will be my 75-80% EDC gun.

Waiting on my 30 day lockout to dros my Glock 20 sf 10mm

Looking to round out for next purchase, I am not sure if I want the Kahr PM9 or P380 for summer pocket carry. I am a bit bigger guy (5'11 230) so can probably get away with the PM9 in pocket carry but for my fourth gun I was gonna get a 357/38 Ruger LCR revolver for that "needs to be smaller than the Kahr but not tiny" situation. So I am thinking there will be crossover between the LCR and the PM9.

I am pretty confident that a .380 would be powerful enough for summer when most bad guys will be in thin clothing anyway and they are pretty accurate.

What do you all think? Mostly between the PM9 and P380.

So my planned guns and the planned reason for purchase of each is as follows.

1.) Kahr P45 EDC, will be carried the most.

2.) Glock 20 sf 10mm, Winter carry and for hiking the trails around here I can put it under my loose t-shirt in summer, or jacket in fall and spring in order not to spook the "normals". There are lots of good fishing trails and hiking trails around here but they are well traveled by others and there are bear and cougar run ins on them throughout the year. Also to protect my dog while walking on said trails from aggressive strays. Will also use it as backup gun while hunting and I want it on the CCW so I don't have to worry about getting hassled if my coat covers it (has happened around here with my Model 66).

3.) Ruger LCR 357/38 can be pocket carried in cargos or big pocket shorts. Will also probably carry it in the same situations as the Glock if the Glock is not appropriate due to it's size, like more close to town trails and such. Will also carry it if I can count on getting really muddy and/or wet since I know it will work anyway.

4.) PM9 or P380 for summer pocket carry around town grocery shopping and the like. Gets super hot here and I don't enjoy the thought of a heavier handgun in a IWB holster.

Anyway, let me know what you think and/or tell us all what is in your "toolbox"

I think its ok to build a CCW "toolbox" as you call it. Just be ready to train with all the different weapons you plan to carry. I pefer to keep it simple and only carry two different guns. A Glock 23 95% of the time, and a LCR for times I cant get away with the glock.

I also pefer to always carry in the same location. IWB at 5 o' clock. I just feel if I am going to have to use it I want it to be almost a reaction. In high stress situations fine motor skills go out the window and you just revert back to what you know.

In my opinion, too may calibers.. Ammo is expensive now days. Too many different ammo capacities and operating platforms to remember and train with. Based upon your writings (and IMHO) the Kahr and the Ruger should be enough for everything you need to do.

I find the .38 snubbie to work best in the summer when you wear shorts and a t shirt. Personally, I could never make anything else work for me when the weather got hot. A pocket holster in a pair of dickies shorts is perfect.
Others seems to have success with bigger guns, but not me.
I also feel that a .38 plus P hollow point is an effective round, and the gun is accurate as well.

Dude, you do not know what the hell you are talking about. I have seen 2 cougars and 3 bears where I hike/fish in the last year or so. Very aggressive stray pit bulls are also not out of the ordinary around here. I do not live in SoCal. I live in a pretty rural area in the mountains in Northern California. I am also not saying that the handgun is going to be my primary hunting tool either obviously. You apparently do not understand the concept of a backup. I fish along streams where there are a ton of bears, mountain lions, and even worse mexican cartel pot growers. I would not CCW the Glock 20 except that I have been hassled by both a F&G cop and a sheriffs deputy in the past because my jacket covered the gun I used to carry while fishing or squirrel or quail hunting. Because you live in a city or very populated area you have no concept of how the world is outside of it.

For everyone else, I may forgo the P380 or PM9 for now and just see if the LCR works for me in that capacity. Thanks for the input. I can always add one of them later if needed.

Also I am getting my CCW here very soon. In amonth or so once I get the guns I plan for it at least for the short term as it is extra money to add after the initial licensing. So like if I have 3 guns when i first get the permit it is the same price as if I was only permitting one. To add one I have to take the course and pay the fee again. I am not concerned about not getting it as we are in practice a shall issue county pretty much. I think the sheriff only turned down one last year according to records. He is pretty good, even posted on his facebook a statement in support of CCW for citizens and exercising their 2nd Amendment rights. So I have no doubt I will be approved as I have a squeaky clean record never even a ticket.

I wild buy the beagle in the picture too. They bark or bay a lot to keep mt. Lions, pitbulls, and bears away. And you'll be known as " the people down the street with the beagle" ( they really bark ALOT)

lol Beagles are cool but they do bark a ton. I know someone who had them in town and ended up having to have them debarked. Sounded pitiful afterwards.

AFAIK you can only have three weapons on your California LTC.

I currently have an M&P 40c and an M&P 340ct. I am going to swap the M&P 40c for a Kahr PM45 that I just got and am still deciding on on either a DB380 or a P380. The 380 will be for pocket carry.

Anyhow. 10mm is bad news for you my friend. 40 is as far as you should go. No mods on the gun. No trigger jobs. Carry 9 in the mag. No crazy exotic ammo for mass destruction. These things will count for/against you in court.

Got an actual case you can cite where this happened?...didn't think so.

btw how many guns you can have on a permit is not specified by the state but by the county, willy nilly. Here, they keep typing, then turn it over, and keep typing.
